About Me

I'm Executive Director of the Modern Language Association, which supports the study and teaching of languages, literature, writing, and cultural studies in higher education and beyond. Before August 2017, I was dean of humanities and social sciences at a regional public university, after two decades at a private liberal arts college. I'm an advocate for liberal arts education and am interested in the differences between public and private higher ed, in access and student success, and in connections between higher education and our larger communities--locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. I have been involved in building consortia among doctoral institutions, regional comprehensive universities, and community colleges.
I write occasionally for the Chronicle and for Inside Higher Ed, and when I served on the Executive Council of the MLA, I advocated for public higher ed, a more flexible model of doctoral education, links to public humanities, and diversifying the profession (in lots of ways). I'm deeply interested in higher ed workforce issues.
I used to be a professional Victorianist; now I'm an amateur.
