About Me

Brian J. Bowe is a veteran journalist, author, and educator whose work examines the interplay of journalism and culture in multiple settings. Earned his Ph.D. in Michigan State University’s Media and Information Studies program, where he also worked as a teaching assistant. For the 2012-13 academic year, Bowe was a graduate fellow in information and communication sciences at CELSA – Université Paris-Sorbonne. From 2010-12, he served as visiting assistant professor of journalism in Grand Valley State University’s School of Communications.

Bowe's research interests include media framing, the media’s agenda setting function, and news coverage of Muslims. In 2010, he co-produced the award-winning short documentary The Death of an Imam. He also co-authored and served as assistant coordinator of the Social Science Research Council-funded project Migrations of Islam: Muslim-American Culture in the 21st Century.

Bowe has written extensively about music. He is the author young adult biographies of the bands Judas Priest, The Ramones and The Clash. He is the co-editor of the anthology CREEM: America’s Only Rock ’n’ Roll Magazine (Harper/Collins), and has written liner notes for releases by Iggy & the Stooges, the MC5 and Was (Not Was). He served as editor of the online resurrection of CREEM Magazine and has published in regional and national publications such as Harp, Blurt, MLive and the Metro Times.

Teaching

As an educator, I believe that my role is to guide my students on a journey of self-discovery, as they maximize their abilities in the service of reaching their ultimate goal -- whatever it may be. Students enter college with boundless potential, seeking the polish and professional training that will help them forge the society in which they want to live. They enter a specific course with a wide variety of perspectives, motivations, aspirations and abilities. It is a personal process, but one that is also shaped by social contexts and, at the university level, a student’s own position in the transition into adulthood. To support students as they work to find their place in society, I work from an approach that is a combination of social cognitive and humanist views, acknowledging that there are both internal and external motivations guiding the learners I encounter.

Considering Pratt and Collins’ Teaching Perspectives Inventory offers one way of sorting out my philosophy regarding nature of knowledge and the role of a teacher. My scores on the TPI — which show dominance on the apprenticeship and nurturing scales — suggest the hybrid orientation toward social cognitive and humanist points of view noted above. These two perspectives are united by a common thread of human agency, which is an important part of adult learning in a higher education context because, for the most part, it is a type of education that students choose to engage in a they pursue some goal.
