About Me

As a scholar, my research centers on medical sociology and social psychology to investigate race, ethnicity, gender, social class, and sexualities, and the intersections among them. My work examines the social factors that produce and maintain disparities in mental, physical, and sexual health. In particular, I investigate the effects prejudice and discrimination on marginalized groups’ health and well-being. As a teacher, I help students to develop a sociologically-informed view of the world, as well as the ability to understand and make use of theory and findings from research. I also encourage my students to think critically, connect course materials to current events and their own lives, and appreciate diverse perspectives and backgrounds. In addition, I contribute to my department, university, and discipline by serving on a number of committees and reviewing articles for academic journals. As an advocate, I work with community organizations and blog regularly to provide scholarly resources and knowledge, and to actively promote the dissemination of new research.
