Kelly J. Baker

Editor at Women in Higher Education

About Me

I'm the editor for Women in Higher Education, a national monthly newsletter. Before that, I was a freelance writer with a religious studies PhD who covers religion, higher education, gender, labor, motherhood, and popular culture. I’m also an essayist, historian, and reporter. I have regular columns at the Chronicle for Higher Education‘s Vitae project, Women in Higher Education, Killing the Buddha, and Sacred Matters. I’ve also written for The Atlantic, Bearings, The Rumpus, The Manifest-Station, Religion Dispatches, Christian Century’s Then & Now, Washington Post, and Brain, Child.

I’m the author of an award-winning book, Gospel According to the Klan: The KKK’s Appeal to Protestant America, 1915-1930, as well as The Zombies Are Coming!: The Realities of the Zombie Apocalypse in American Culture. When I’m not writing assignments or wrangling two children, I’m working my way toward a collections of essays about endings and other apocalypses.

My PhD (2008) is in American religious history from Florida State University‘s department of Religion. My scholarship encompasses a variety of topics including religion and popular culture, religious and racial hatred, apocalypticism, religion and gender, and horror. I’ve taught courses on these topics at Florida State University, the University of New Mexico and the University of Tennessee.

I live in Tallahassee, Florida, with my husband, two kids, dog, and a mean kitty.

My disciplines and areas of professional expertise include…

Current work
