The School of Art & Design in the College of Creative Arts, at West Virginia University invites applications for an energetic and visionary art and object conservation professional to lead our newly-established and first-in-the-nation undergraduate major in Technical Art History. The appointment will be for a Visiting Assistant Professor with an annual contract which may be renewed up to three-years. The position may develop into a tenure-track position depending upon the funding and needs of the Technical Art History degree program.

Duties include: teaching new Technical Art History courses each year and mentoring undergraduate researchers; attracting and maintaining students and promoting the program; specifying new equipment; establishing internship opportunities in the state and region for pre-program conservation training; conducting a program of research/scholarly activity appropriate to art and object conservation; ideally, formulating interdisciplinary research project; applying for external grants and identifying external partners to generate funding; other duties as assigned.

The successful candidate: will strategically expand the program's external network to develop internships and cultivate research partners. WVU's location in Morgantown is ideally situated to access conservation centers and is within a four-hour radius of Washington, D.C., and Cleveland, OH, and less than two hours from Pittsburgh, PA, and Harpers Ferry, WV.

The successful candidate will build on the interdisciplinary and cross-college relationships already established on campus with: chemistry; forensic and investigative science; studio art; anthropology and archaeology; public history and history; Shared Research Facilities; The Art Museum of WVU; the WVU Libraries and Rare Books Collections.

Opportunity beyond the nine-month appointment: The new faculty member will also have the opportunity to work with San Gemini Preservation Studies, in San Gemini, Italy, through WVU's new Affiliation Agreement. There is potential for teaching onsite in the summer and developing international research relationships.

Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. or Master of Arts or Science degree (or equivalent international degree) in art conservation by time of appointment
  • A minimum of two-years post-MA/MS degree practice in art conservation
  • Demonstrated accomplishments and ability to conduct conservation research
  • A collaborative predisposition and the ability to work independently
  • A commitment to teaching and mentoring students
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
  • Object conservation expertise
  • Successful record of acquiring external funding or grants
  • Especially interested in applicants who are approved Assessors for the CAP Program or working towards it or will earn CAP certification
  • The ideal candidate would have knowledge in disaster planning and response, preventive conservation, and collection surveys.
