The Department of English at the University of Houston invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in medieval literature. Applicants should demonstrate research and teaching expertise in the works of Geoffrey Chaucer and a broad range of non-Chaucerian Middle English texts, Arthurian texts, continental medieval literatures and knowledge of languages most relevant to the study of English medieval literature in its European context: Latin, Old French, German. The successful candidate will have a strong, developing research profile, with an established publication record; they will also have evidence of effective teaching, with possible nods to classes with community-based research, digital platforms, or innovative pedagogical designs.

The Department of English is a large, dynamic department offering the M.A. and Ph.D. in English and American literature; the M.F.A. and Ph.D. in Literature and Creative Writing; a doctoral concentration in Rhetoric, Composition, and Pedagogy; and graduate certificates in Translation Studies, Empire Studies, Poetics, and Teaching of English as an Additional Language. At the undergraduate level, we offer a concentration in Applied Linguistics and a soon-to-be-approved minor in Writing Studies. In addition to the English Department's strengths, the University of Houston's College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences offers strong programs in Modern and Classical Languages (with faculty in Classical, Translation, and Jewish Studies) and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.

Complete applications should include the following items: letter of application; current curriculum vitae; dissertation or book abstract; one scholarly writing sample of no more than twenty (20) pages (a dissertation chapter, for example, or an article); evidence of effective teaching (a summary of teaching evaluations, sample syllabi, and/or a teaching philosophy); and a copy of graduate transcripts. Qualifications :

Ph.D. must be in hand by the time the position begins in Fall 2020.
