Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job
Teaching, scholarship, and service.

The teaching expectation is three courses per semester. The candidate will teach primarily at the undergraduate level face-to-face and online (teaching methodology courses and Spanish language courses) and, occasionally, at the graduate level in field of specialization. Duties include but are not limited to: coordination of syllabus and curriculum development for the Spanish teaching minor as per statewide educational initiatives in conjunction with chair; program assessment; training and supervision of pre-service teachers; developing and maintaining educational partnerships in the local community and school districts; working with office staff on enrollment management; planning and actively participating in the department's Language Learning and Teaching Workshop Series, and other research groups both in WOLC and education.

Educational Requirements for the Position
PhD in hand by August 2019 (only those who furnish an official defense date before August 2019, if ABD at this time, will be considered) in Spanish with documented specialization in Teacher Education, Language and Culture Pedagogy, Second Language Acquisition, Heritage Language Education, or a PhD in education with a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in Spanish.

Experience Required for the Position
The Department of World Languages and Cultures ( WOLC ) and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences ( CHSS ) at Sam Houston State University invite applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty member in Spanish at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will demonstrate a record of research and teaching expertise in the language and of cultural and pedagogical issues surrounding the teaching/learning of Spanish in K-12 education. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of Texas educational policy and initiatives, as well as a current and well-defined research agenda covering topics which address multiculturalism in the classroom, either directly or indirectly.

Other Requirements for the Position
Qualifications: demonstrated research and teaching experience of teaching/learning Spanish in K-12 education; native or near-native fluency in both Spanish and English; experience developing curriculum for pre-service teachers using best practices as outlined by statewide initiatives, including the Languages Other Than English ( LOTE ) and the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills ( TEKS ); minimum of three years of college /university level teaching experience using task-based and proficiency-based instructional methods with demonstrated instructional excellence; knowledge of current concepts and methods in foreign language learning and instruction, including those related to online course delivery; experience and/or willingness to teach online courses; familiarity with the American Council of the Teaching of Foreign Languages ( ACTFL ) standards and the Oral Proficiency Interview ( OPI ) scales; expertise or promise in applying new technologies to teaching language and culture, outstanding scholarly potential in field of specialization; outstanding interpersonal and organizational skills as well as demonstrated capacity to provide effective goal-oriented leadership. Preference will be given to candidates who either have knowledge of and experience with Texas educational policy and initiatives or experience with another state's policy and initiatives.

Teaching responsibilities are both at the main SHSU campus in Huntsville, Texas (located 70 miles north of Houston), occasionally, at The Woodlands Campus (40 miles south of Huntsville), and online.
