Position Announcement
The Department of Romance Languages at the University of Oregon invites applications for the position of tenure track Assistant or Associate Professor in Spanish Sociolinguistics and Director of the Spanish Heritage Language (SHL) program. Research areas might include sociocultural linguistics, educational linguistics, Spanish of the U.S. or the U.S.-Mexico borderlands, or language ideologies and power. Expertise in ethnographic, community-based, and/or multimodal research methods is particularly valuable. The successful applicant will have an established research program and strong publication record; demonstrated excellence in the teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students, specifically underrepresented and underserved minorities and those for whom Spanish is a heritage language; and expertise in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in research, teaching, and institutional practices.

The position entails directing a vibrant Spanish Heritage Language program as well as teaching a range of courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels (Introduction to Spanish linguistics, Spanish phonetics, Spanish as a heritage language, SHL and second-language teaching methods, language variation, etc.) and participating in the Second Language Acquisition and Teaching (SLAT) certificate program. We seek candidates who will contribute to the development of a graduate program in Spanish Linguistics as well as the Language and Society concentration of the undergraduate major in Spanish, and who will actively collaborate with faculty within Romance Languages (French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish sectors) and across campus in interdisciplinary endeavors (e.g., Linguistics, Ethnic Studies, Education, Women’s and Gender Studies, Latinx and Latin American Studies, College of Education).

Department or Program Summary
The Department of Romance Languages is located in the College of Arts and Sciences, and is a diverse, multicultural, and plurilingual academic unit that researches and instructs in French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish languages and literatures. It is the largest foreign language department at the University of Oregon and frequently intersects with other departments and colleges on campus. The department sponsors and supports numerous activities such as lectures, film festivals, study abroad programs, international conference, and community events.

Our department is composed of faculty members of different national origins, nationally and internationally distinguished, and a body of talented students pursuing Master’s and Doctoral degrees. There are approximately 47 full-time faculty and 38 graduate students.

The department’s undergraduate program serves approximately 325 majors, teaches approximately 10,383 student credit hours per term and is a major contributor to the University of Oregon’s Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree program.

Minimum Requirements
Assistant level: Ph.D. and professional proficiency in English and Spanish.

Associate level: Ph.D., demonstrated teaching experience, and professional proficiency in English and Spanish.

Preferred Qualifications
A successful candidate will be expected to conduct a vigorous research program and to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Additionally, successful candidates will support and enhance a diverse learning and working environment.
