Position Announcement
The School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) seeks a dynamic tenure-track assistant professor of sports communication to join our nationally and internationally recognized program dedicated to student-centered experiential learning and communication in the public interest, with an emphasis on diversity and inclusion. The position encompasses a strategic public relations approach to sports communication, complementing related research strengths within the SOJC, such as sports reporting, and programs across the UO campus, such as the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center. The position is based on the UO’s campus in Eugene, known as Tracktown USA, host of the US Olympic Track & Field trials as well as numerous other sporting events tied to the Pac-12 athletic conference. Opportunities exist to also teach and participate in programs at the School’s Portland Center.

The successful candidate will teach strategic public relations classes and work with colleagues to expand our sports communication offerings. We value colleagues who share our priorities: attracting undergraduate and graduate talent, offering relevant experiential-learning opportunities, producing robust research that advances the field, and contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all our endeavors.

Department or Program Summary
The SOJC is an ACEJMC-accredited program with over a 100-year history at the University of Oregon, which is a comprehensive research university and a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU). Our program thrives as a journalism and communication school known for innovation, ethics, and action. We offer four undergraduate concentrations (in advertising, journalism, media studies, and public relations), five professional and academic master’s programs, and a doctoral program in media studies.

Minimum Requirements
Ph.D. (ABD considered) and a demonstrated research agenda in sports communication with evidence of scholarly publication and a strong interest in furthering the knowledge and practice of sports communication as it relates to public relations, such as, but not limited to, sports crisis management, managing sponsorships, ongoing gender equity issues in sports, or sustainability and CSR in sports organizations.

Preferred Qualifications
A successful candidate will support and enhance a diverse learning and working environment. Experience with applying for and securing external grants from relevant public and private sources, professional experience, and demonstrated teaching ability is preferred.

About the University
Eugene often appears on lists of the most livable communities in the country. It enjoys the cultural amenities of a larger city – hosting concerts that span the musical spectrum, the world-famous Bach Festival, and many other festivals and celebrations – and the accessible real estate, lack of traffic, and relaxed lifestyle of a small city. Recreational possibilities abound, ranging from hiking or mountain biking picturesque trails to playing nationally-ranked golf courses to running the same paths on which Olympic athletes train. (Known as Tracktown USA, Eugene hosts the US Olympic Track & Field trials, as well as numerous other sporting events tied to the Pac-12 athletic conference.) Eugene lies just 60 miles from ski resorts in the mountains to the east and 60 miles from the scenic Oregon coast to the west. In the heart of Oregon wine country, Eugene also enjoys a nationally-recognized food scene.
