The Associate Director of International Student Success plays a key role in the work of the College of Arts and Sciences and Maxwell advising team. Position requires a professional leader with expertise in designing proactive intentional programming for international students and advisors to directly support the international student population within the College of Arts and Sciences and Maxwell.
This position is also responsible for creating training and development opportunities for the CAS/Maxwell advising staff to improve the international student experience within the advising office.
This role requires collaboration with the advising team, academic departments, the Slutzker Center for International Services, and the First Year Transition Program office to provide outstanding support to our international students, supporting their academic and professional goals and timely completion of their degrees. The Associate Director will sit in on student advising sessions where necessary to help remediate escalated student cases.
Additionally, the successful candidate will utilize international student data to direct academic and advising business processes to positively impact the international student experience and student success.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree or bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 5 years of experience required. Degrees in an area related to education or psychology are preferred.

• Applicants to this position possessing the ability to speak and write fluently in Mandarin will be prioritized as 80% of Syracuse University’s International population holds Mandarin as their native language.

Job Specific Qualifications

• Maintain knowledge of empirical trends in international student success to effectively implement international student academic engagement programming.

• High level knowledge in academic counseling methods and career modeling will be required to interpret and communicate with students and peers.

• Ability to communicate and work with diverse populations is necessary, as are excellent interpersonal, planning, teamwork, and organizational skills.

• Ability to independently interpret and make recommendations for improvement in advising policy and procedure.

• Possess an intellectual curiosity to foster continued professional growth and a willingness to learn new approaches to supporting students.

• As a member of the College of Arts and Sciences and Maxwell Advising team, the Associate Director must embrace our university’s core value of inclusivity, ensuring that all students and constituents of the university are served in a caring, respectful manner.

• High level knowledge in academic counseling methods and career modeling will be required to interpret and communicate with students and peers.

Responsibilities

• Creation and delivery of an international student academic success and engagement plan. Integrate this plan with the current undergraduate “Integrated academic and career advising plan”. Creation of measurable student learning outcomes and assessments for the plan. Consisting of advising programming specifically designed to proactively and intentionally engage international students on the following topics/issues:

- Academic Program Requirements - Career Services Support - Undergraduate Research - University Resource Utilization - Cultural Integration

• Identify, create, and deliver international student training and professional development opportunities for advisors within Undergraduate Office of Academic and Career Advising.

• Utilization of data to identify impediments to the international student experience and international student success. Create data driven recommendations to deliver to the Assistant Dean of Student Success to advocate for ways to change processes and policies to positively effect international student experience. Specific areas for near-term examination are:

- First Year International Student Course Registration Process - International Student Retention Plan - Students in academic difficulty - Look for pre-warning stages of struggling to life adjustment in US; advisor referrals, and potential Orange Success flags. - Develop intervention strategies - Aid in the connection with appropriate resources on and off-campus - High achievers - Encourage high achievers to become engaged in campus opportunities that will retain them at SU.

• Assisting in the collaboration around escalated student cases with advisors. Step in to assist, communicate, and make possible recommendations for students who need an extra level of support in the moment.
