To secure current-use and capital commitments of up to $250,000 from a diverse constituency in support of Dartmouth College's institutional priorities. The Managing Director will manage a select portfolio of prospective donors, demonstrating successful cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major donors.

Minimum Experience
  • Six or more years of experience in a complex college or university development operation, or the equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience soliciting and closing four, five and six-figure gifts.
  • Deep understanding of and appreciation for the philanthropic process and individual giving behaviors combined with direct solicitation experience.
Minimum Education
  • Bachelor's degree required.

Key Accountabilities

PROSPECT MANAGEMENT , SOLICITATION , AND STEWARDSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Manages a portfolio of prospective donors capable of making comprehensive gifts of four, five and six-figure gifts in support of Dartmouth's institutional priorities, developing prospect strategy, soliciting gifts, and stewarding donors.
  • Works toward aggressive solicitations that set sights high for gifts and participation from individuals, demonstrating use of innovation, risk taking and tenacity to achieve goals.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with Development staff and volunteers who might assist with prospect strategies and promote maximum giving.
  • Earns reputation as good citizen of and ambassador for Dartmouth through strong representation of the College to both internal and external diverse constituencies; seeks status of trusted advisor, collaborative colleague, and effective mentor.
  • Schedules appointments and oversees the preparation of necessary materials, including funding proposals, briefings for senior officers and Trustees and scheduled stewardship reports, for all assigned prospects utilizing campus resources. Identifies prospects to participate in specific events, committees, or other programs that promote the cultivation process.
  • Develops approaches and activities that lead to successful solicitation of gift planning and special gift donors. This requires an in-depth knowledge of types of gift planning vehicles and legal aspects of charitable giving.
  • Partners with Gift Planning officers to devise an overall strategy for cultivating, soliciting and stewardship of planned gift donors.
  • Develops knowledge base of tax, investment, and legal aspects of charitable giving and articulates this knowledge clearly and effectively in discussions with prospective donors, their counsel, colleagues, and volunteers.
  • Ensures stewardship is provided to donors on existing endowment and current-use funds.

PROGRAM PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT
  • Reports to the Director to establish performance goals in assigned development areas; monitors progress against goals and devises strategies to ensure success in meeting goals.
  • Participates in long-range planning for assigned area(s) and full department as appropriate.
  • Organizes, trains, and supports volunteers individually and in committees to engage and solicit special gift prospects.
  • Incorporates the needs of diverse populations in program planning.
  • Attends appropriate college events, programs, and meetings.

COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Articulates and implements strategies for communicating with donors; drafts and customizes institutional correspondence, gift acknowledgement letters, proposals and other written materials for assigned prospects.
  • Writes contact reports and compiles other pertinent information following donor/prospect visits.
  • Communicates and advocates the needs of the College to assigned prospects.
  • Develops and maintains strong, effective and collaborative working relationships with colleagues in other College programs, particularly the Dartmouth College Fund, Gift Planning, and Leadership Giving, as well as colleagues in the three professional schools and with volunteers, faculty, and administrators.
  • Effectively communicates a commitment to the values and mission of Dartmouth College and higher education and to the goals and guiding principles of Development.
  • Participates as a proactive, positive, contributing member of the New York team.
