The Center for Innovation in Learning and Student Success (CILSS) at UMUC seeks a Director of Learning Sciences and Innovation who has a strong interest in solving learning challenges in the higher education environment. This new position will focus on creating an action research approach to further the continuous improvement of the UMUC learning model.
This person will join a new team that will work with deans and faculty in academic departments on innovative pilots in a rapid prototyping atmosphere. CILSS is a key part of the rapidly evolving learning model at UMUC. The successful candidate will work in collaboration with our undergraduate and graduate schools to create and evaluate learning interventions that will increase student learning and success.

This position will focus improving student learning and success for adult and nontraditional students. The successful candidate will provide expertise on the design of evaluation studies, appropriate statistical methods, and new approaches to learning.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
  • Plays a critical role in identifying and developing platforms that drive sustainable, scalable, and research driven learning innovation
  • Responsible for driving fast-paced projects to deliver tangible short-term results, while maintaining a long-term, strategic portfolio of learning innovation projects and systems
  • Incorporate adult learning theories which promote student success and learning cognition into rapid prototype design.
  • Design improved approaches to University learning processes, methodologies and educational technologies based on a deep understanding of learning research and science
  • Leverage learning science to address instructional challenges and create environments that enable robust learning.
  • Provide leadership in the design of pilots and partner with a cross-functional innovation team.
  • Incorporate cognitive, as well as non-cognitive and 21st century skills into innovative approaches
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Master's degree in a related field from an accredited institution
  • Three to Five years of experience in learning science
  • Knowledge of higher education would be preferred, but evaluation research in K12, industry, or government sectors may be substituted.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • PhD in Learning Science or Instructional Design
