The Johns Hopkins University Office of the Vice President and General Counsel has an immediate opening for a paralegal with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in basic legal research, primarily in the areas of contracts, healthcare law, real estate and reviewing and drafting contracts. The Office of the Vice President and General Counsel provides legal advice and representation for the University, its Board of Trustees, all academic and administrative offices and divisions. The office has locations on the Homewood campus in North Baltimore and in East Baltimore, where the health divisions are located. The current opening is in the East Baltimore location, which has four attorneys and a legal secretary.

The successful candidate will be able to work in fast paced environment, and balance multiple projects while meeting client expectations. Candidates must possess strong interpersonal, analytical, writing, computer, organization, and verbal skills, and must have the ability to work effectively and collegially as part of a team with a significant workload and a dedication to client service.

The Paralegal must be a highly organized, persistent problem solver in order to thrive in this environment.

Responsibilities:

Support on Advice Matters:
  • Basic legal research on matters related to healthcare, research, higher education and related areas.
  • Draft memoranda, prepare chronologies and other analyses, and draft basic correspondence, releases and other documents as needed and directed by counsel.
  • Assist with transition of matters to litigation attorneys and paralegal as necessary.


Support in Transaction Matters:
  • Assist with the review and drafting of various agreements and forms involving basic and complex business transactions of the University.
  • Maintain a database of all contracts within job description, in coordination with similar database at the Homewood Office.
  • Assist with the maintenance of a forms library.


Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree or Certificate in Paralegal Studies from an accredited institution and/or degree in Business Administration or related field and five years of paralegal experience of progressively increasing responsibility are required. Additional experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula, noted below.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong computer software skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), document management software
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to manage high work volume
  • Excellent proofreading skills
  • Knowledge of legal citation rules and formatting

Budgeted Salary:$21.93-$30.18 per hour

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
