OMIM, the online version of Mendelian Inheritance in Man, is a
compendium of bibliographic material and observations on inherited
disorders and genes maintained by geneticists and molecular
biologists. This knowledge base is updated continuously and is
available internationally via the World Wide Web. The Sr. Technical
Writer will be responsible for abstracting relevant information
from the biomedical literature according to OMIM style and
submitting the summary for incorporation into the database. The Sr.
Technical Writer is integral to maintaining the scientific
integrity of OMIM. This position is responsible to the Editorial
Director and Program Manager.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Qualifications:
Masters degree in relevant field. One year of related experience.
Preferred:
MD, PhD in human genetics or Masters degree in Genetics Counseling from ACGC accredited program desired and fiveyears clinical experience for candidates with a Masters degree in Genetic Counseling.

Salary: $57,544 - $80,000
Status: Full-Time
Work Schedule/Hours: Monday-Friday/8:30-5p/37.5 hrs

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.
The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.

- Read and scan articles selected from the current biomedical literature.
- Abstract information from relevant articles for submission to and incorporation into OMIM.
- Identify additional articles that may be needed for adequate coverage of a topic.
- Use online analysis and retrieval tools (e.g., BLAST, Entrez, PubMed) to verify information and associations.
- Revise and reorganize catalog entries, as directed by the Editorial Director.
- Correspond with scientific community, as necessary, to clarify inconsistencies and problems in the literature.
