Center Brief:

The Center for American Indian Health (CAIH) is located administratively within International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The core activities housed at CAIH include research studies of infectious diseases and behavioral health, and a training program.

General Summary:

The goals of the Nutrition Team (behavioral health projects) are to empower American Indian youth to realize their full potential through the promotion of physical fitness, healthy nutrition, and the acquisition of positive life skills.

The Research Program Coordinator works as a full-time staff member with a primary focus on behavioral and community-health programs run by Johns Hopkins Center for American Indian Health to benefit members of Indigenous groups such as Native Americans, Alaskan Natives and First Nations. The Nutrition/Fitness programs are designed to bring program innovations and activities to underserved communities in an effort to overcome barriers to affordability and accessibility to healthy foods. The Center is located within the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and has a mission to work in partnership with American Indian tribes to raise the health status and self-sufficiency of American Indian people to the highest possible level. This mission is accomplished through three core activities: 1) research, 2) service, and 3) training.

This position is based in Whiteriver, AZ with travel to participating field sites and Baltimore required on a regular basis, as well as relevant public health conferences. The staff member reports to the Program Manager. This position works together with the Center’s Albuquerque and Baltimore-based behavioral health faculty and reservation-based research team to empower American Indian youth to realize their full potential through the promotion of physical fitness, healthy nutrition, and the acquisition of positive life skills. The individual working in this position may assist with other field-based behavioral health programs currently ongoing and newly-started in the Center.

Duties and Responsibilities:

This position serves as a full-time Research Program Coordinator for nutrition and fitness research projects. Specific responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: Coordinate site-based development and implementation of NativeVision Year Round program curriculum. This includes coordinating NativeVision sports, life skills, youth leadership and collaborating community service programs to encourage healthy lifestyles and positive youth development.

Coordinate Native Vision mini-camps that will be conducted during school breaks. Assist with the implementation of the evaluation plan to measure changes in fitness levels, nutrition knowledge, self-esteem, and culture connectedness from the beginning to the end of the program. Maintain program records and complete regular progress reports.

Attend meetings with local partners to get input and feedback on nutrition and fitness program development.

Assist with all reporting requirements in cooperation with community and tribal partners.

Assist with Behavioral Health program needs within other teams on an as-needed basis.

Administrative Responsibilities:

Provides complex administrative and project support for the Center’s field-based faculty members and staff. Manage office organization including purchasing and inventory of supplies, reconciling monthly project reports, facilitating maintenance and repair of project vehicles, and facilitating information technology (IT) needs.

Under the supervision of the Senior Research Program Coordinator will exercise sound judgment in the resolution of administrative needs in the office.
Arranges meetings, make travel arrangements, draft and edit correspondence, screen and triage incoming calls and correspondence.

Locates and compiles information and formats reports, graphs, tables, records, and other sources of information. Assists in the reconciliation of gift card logs and purchase receipts/logs.

Assists with special projects and events.

Places orders, verifies shipments, and resolves purchasing related issues.

Registers staff members for conferences and makes travel arrangements. Processes staff travel and business expenses. Operates and coordinates servicing of office equipment such as copier, fax machine, scanner, etc.

Participate in the completion of applicant and new hire documents and orientation of new employees and student interns as needed.

Maintain knowledge of all of the Center’s projects and assist with other Center duties as they arise.

Works as part of a team committed to excellence in customer service.

Oversees office operations in accordance with established site policies and trains others as appropriate.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related discipline.

Some related experience.

Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula : 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Current driver’s license issued by the state of residence and good driving record.

Ability to travel with overnight stays required as needed. Some evening, weekend and holiday work may be required.

May be required to float to other sites. Guidelines regarding travel time and project vehicle use will be clarified based on specific site needs.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
