The Johns Hopkins Center for Adolescent Health, a CDC funded Prevention Research Center committed to assisting urban youth in becoming healthy and productive adults, is seeking a full-time Research Assistant (RA) to support intervention research related to adolescent sexual health. The RA will work side-by-side with faculty, graduate students, and staff to conduct high quality school-, community- and church- based research. The RA will be expected provide research, technical, and administrative support for the broad range of research undertaken by the Center for Adolescent Health. For example, one project aims to reduce the birth and sexually transmitted infections rate among Baltimore teens through the implementation of evidence-based programs in clinics, middle and high schools. Another project works with churches to address the confounding issues of sexual risk-taking and substance use among youth with substance abusing parents.

Duties

  • Act as the primary liaison between our team and Baltimore City school teachers who are implementing the program.
  • Schedule observations with teachers and ensure they have completed all evaluation tasks.
  • Track evaluation requirements and prepare data requests.
  • Assist with the preparation of quarterly and annual reports.
  • Maintain accurate records of collected data, safeguarding the confidentiality of participants, as necessary and assist with data entry.
  • Complete Human Subjects Training through Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.
  • Attend weekly research team meetings.
  • Participate in dissemination efforts.
  • Assist with other project tasks as needed.

    Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in related discipline.

    Some related experience.

    Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
    JHU Equivalency Formula : 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.


    Preferred Qualifications

    • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
    • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and at least one of the following data software packages: SAS, STATA, Atlas, or NVivo.
    • Familiarity with Baltimore and Baltimore City Public Schools (or willingness to learn).
    • Ability to follow a research protocol and ensure confidentiality of participant.
    • Manage large-scale scheduling tasks.
    • Ask questions for clarification and guidance.
    • Receive and respond appropriately to feedback.
    • Communicate clearly with a variety of people including faculty, staff, teachers, and health department personnel in person, over the phone, and through email.
    • Complete multiple tasks on a timely basis.
    • Travel to offsite meetings throughout Baltimore City on a consistent basis.

      During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception.       The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
