Johns Hopkins University is seeking a senior laboratory technical manager to oversee the newly established Flow Cytometry technology development center entitled the Bloomberg-Kimmel Institute for Cancer Immuno-therapy/BMS Laboratory of Excellence for Advanced Flow Cytometry studies. This position will oversee the new technology center whose purpose is to develop and advance the most sophisticated new flow technologies for BKI investigators. The Center will operationalize several new instruments including a state-of-the-art 50 color sorter and provide consultation in the design and implementation of experiments to maximize the use of this new technology to enhance research. On a broader level, this position plays a key role in the selection and implementation of new instrumentation, advanced technical expertise and the ability to support collaborative research projects on the cutting edge of high complexity high parameter flow cytometry and multi-dimensional sorting studies as relates to research areas in translational medical research.

The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to collaborate and possess extensive and exceptional technical and scientific skills in advanced flow cytometry and related technologies. The individual must have previously demonstrated the ability to successfully manage the various operational aspects of a multi-instrument high volume flow cytometry facility.

This individual will work closely with multiple research scientists to ensure accurate, relevant and reproducible data is being generated. This candidate must demonstrate knowledge and concepts of QC/QA as well as familiarity with high dimensional analytical software. This position will be filled by a person who will be responsible for the development of new analytical methods and for troubleshooting analytical methods and instrumentation. Additionally, the person will oversee center personnel and be responsible for training and mentoring new hires.

Duties and Responsibilities

The person in this position will:

Oversee the BKI flow technology center to develop and advance the most sophisticated new flow technologies for BKI investigators.

Provide advanced technical expertise in the application of flow cytometry/cell sorting technologies to research problems and in the development of new technologies to advance translational research.

Design and develop specialized flow cytometry methods and techniques that can be utilized by Bloomberg~Kimmel Institute users.

Execute highly complex level of sorting and analytical experiments for downstream applications.

Provide operation, QC, maintenance and troubleshooting of a state of the art BD brand cell sorter in a BSL3 sterile environment.

Work closely with principal investigators and their laboratory scientists – students, postdocs, technicians and research associates - in technical aspects of the development of research proposals.

Applies extensive knowledge of concepts, principles, practices and methods specifically used in analysis and cell sorting. Demonstrates expertise in multi- parameter analysis of cells, identification and/or sorting of cell populations using flow cytometry technology.

Maintain an advanced level of scientific skill and/or knowledge and keeps up with current developments and trends in the area of flow cytometry.

Perform daily assessment and troubleshooting of the instruments and equipment to identify the need for repair; maintain quality control for procedures and function checks on equipment.

Design and conducting studies to be completed independently or in collaboration with an investigator.

Oversees and/or conducts multiple, concurrent assignments or a multi-faceted project.

Compiles, analyzes, and interprets research data using specialized computer software applications.

Monitors documentation of results; reviews and recognizes documentation which may lead to modification and adaptation of research methodologies; must collaborate with others. Adapts and/or modifies experimental methods based upon interpretation of data.

Uses advanced knowledge base to author/co-author publications.

Assist in submitting grant proposals utilizing the application of specialized knowledge. Prepare, revise, and review SOPs developed in the laboratory.

Give presentations for scientific meetings.

Ensure compliance with quality control analytical testing guidelines.

Oversees and assures laboratory compliance with regulatory requirements and JHU standards, policies and procedures. Provides training and mentoring to research staff and new hires.

Leads and mentors the research staff to prioritize and schedule projects.

Evaluate resources and determine research priorities when making decisions.

Performs related work as assigned.

Qualifications

Master's degree in related science, six years related experience, proven technical knowledge and laboratory experience.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
