Proficient senior research laboratory specialist with a sophisticated understanding of techniques and a solid foundation in the underlying science, gained from experience. Designs experiments and studies, analyzes data, and contributes to manuscript. Works independently and manages daily research projects. Will present at departmental/divisional meetings, and provides training to other individuals who may be assigned to the laboratory on a regular or temporary basis. The senior research specialist will assist the principle investigator in the development and coordination of specific research projects, experimentation, data collection and analysis, and organization of the laboratory.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Performs clinical and/or research lab tests and experiments. Follows established procedures and protocols, utilize appropriate technique to design and perform laboratory tests and/or experiments. Participates in planning experiments and evaluating/interpreting test results utilizing detailed knowledge of research laboratory procedures and practices. Selects, develops, performs and evaluates research methods; operates appropriate equipment. Reports and records outcomes/results of all tests. Exchanges routine information in an appropriate manner requiring good oral and written communication. Regular interaction with students, vendors, post-doctoral fellows, faculty members, and other clinical fellows, that may include training. Monitors biohazard/radiation safety standards and proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources in the workplace. May responsible for routine operational activities such as; ordering supplies and materials, reviewing inventory, maintaining up to date records of tests, etc. Preventative maintenance of equipment. Monitors inventory levels and proper storage of materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field. Four years’ experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques. Master’s degree highly desired.

Advanced knowledge of good lab practices required. Individual must to work independently, under minimal supervision with strong decision making skills and good judgment. Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, electronic mail, World Wide Web, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or test reports, with solid background in basic biostatistics.

Many department laboratories operate 24/7 with schedules on day, evening, or night shift. Rotating schedules which may include weekend work and holiday assignment. (Overtime possible when authorized/needed to meet business and patient needs).

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
