The Graphic Designer conceives and implements design solutions to increase the awareness and adoption of JHU Press’ 80+ scholarly journals and 20+ client societies.
As a member of a small marketing team with a reputation for making a big impact, the Graphic Designer provides design support to the JHU Press Journals Division using print and digital media.
The scope of this position is to perform a wide range of duties from the routine to complex. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, conceptualizing, designing, and producing websites, promotional landing pages, email campaigns, direct mail campaigns, catalogs, advertisements, order forms, flyers, specialty items, exhibit display/signage and marketing presentations.
This role encompasses project management and some administrative responsibilities, so candidates must be comfortable proactively sharing updates with other team members and managing multiple projects with multiple internal and external clients.
The Graphic Designer reports to the Director of Journal Sales and Marketing.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conceptualizes designs and prepares art for presentation and mass production with significant focus on both meeting client/customer needs as well as effective use of resources and budget.
  • Supports the project management, copy, production, and print purchase functions associated with the development of a variety of marketing materials.
  • Writes and edits basic copy and headlines, as appropriate.
  • Works with clients/customers to effectively interpret creative/production needs.
  • Coordinates with outside vendors, project managers, clients, and other marketing staff to deliver projects on schedule, within budget, and within internal standards and processes.
  • Produces webpages, client websites and other digital assets using Drupal.
  • Provides content management, technical and training support across multiple sites including, the JHU Press website and all JHU Press client hosted independent websites.
  • Presents finished layouts to Journals Publisher, Director of Journal Sales and Marketing and client for approval.
  • Maintains and archives design files and graphic standards guides.
  • Adheres to JHU Press creative and graphic guidelines/standards in the development of all materials.
  • Addresses technical/file trouble-shooting and design issues or considerations.
  • Assists staff, vendors or other customers by answering questions related to design production processes, procedures and services.
  • Stays current on latest industry technologies, trends and strategies.
  • Adapts to the changing needs of the department, develops new skills, and assists with projects outside of normal job responsibilities as needed.


Qualifications

Education
  • Bachelor's degree in fine arts, graphic design, or related field required.

Experience
  • Two years of experience in graphic design and website development and maintenance required.
  • Work in academic publishing or association marketing environment is helpful.
  • Must have a strong portfolio demonstrating a range of print and online graphic design skills.

Knowledge & Skills
  • Proficient skills in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is required.
  • Advanced skills in Adobe Creative suite (InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator) is required.
  • Experience working with HTML and CSS is required.
  • Solid understanding of image formats (EPS, TIF, GIF, JPEG, PDF) is required.
  • Experience working with Drupal, and WordPress is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of social media platforms including Facebook and Twitter is preferred.
  • Experience with Infographics is a plus.
  • Experience with Emma Email Marketing Solutions is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of video production is a plus.
  • Strong layout and design skills as well as a thorough understanding of prepress and print production are required.
  • Accuracy, attention to detail, flexibility, and ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment is essential.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Solid analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability and willingness to quickly adapt to new technologies.
