The Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine - Howard County General Hospital is seeking a Clinical Associate. This is a non-faculty, senior staff position in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, working as an attending anesthesiologist providing anesthetic care to patients in the operating room with a medical staff appointment at the Johns Hopkins Howard County General Hospital.

The Clinical Associate consistent with the area of practice and privileges, provide perioperative medical care. Manage patients during surgical and certain other medical procedures; including preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative evaluation and treatment. Direct resuscitation in the care of patients with cardiac or respiratory emergencies, including the need for artificial ventilation, pulmonary care, supervision of patients in post-anesthesia care units and critically ill patients in special care units. On call coverage may also be required. Case mix may include both general and specialty care.

Duties and Responsibilities

Patient Care:
Provides patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective. Performs competently all medical and invasive procedures considered essential for area of practice.

Gathers essential and accurate information about patients to develop and carry out patient care plans. Makes informed decisions about diagnostic and therapeutic interventions based on patient information and preferences, up-to-date scientific evidence and clinical judgment.

Documents care appropriately and completes medical records in a timely manner, including but not limited to, the timely and accurate preparation of billing forms, completion of patient notes detailing services provided and other documentation required by ACCM and Johns Hopkins Howard County General Hospital.

Medical/Clinical Knowledge:
Demonstrates knowledge of established and evolving biomedical, clinical and social sciences, and the application of knowledge to patient care and the education of others.

Demonstrates an investigatory and analytical thinking approach to clinical situations. Knows and applies the basic and clinically supportive sciences appropriate to discipline.

Practice-Based Learning and Improvement:
Able to use scientific evidence and methods to investigate, evaluate, and improve patient care practices. Locates, appraises, and assimilates evidence from scientific studies related to patient’s health problems.

Uses information technology to manage information, accesses on-line medical information and supports own continuing education. Facilitates the teaching and learning of students, CRNAs, and other health care professionals, and provides supervision as required.

Interpersonal and Communication Skills:
Demonstrates interpersonal and communication skills that establish and maintain professional relationships with patients, families and other members of health care teams.

Uses effective listening skills, elicits and provides information using effective nonverbal, explanatory, questioning, and writing skills. Works effectively with others as a member or leader of a health care team.

Professionalism:
Demonstrates behaviors that reflect a commitment to continuous professional development, ethical practice, an understanding and sensitivity to diversity and a responsible attitude toward patients, profession, and society.

Demonstrates respect, compassion and integrity, and a commitment to excellence and on-going professional development. Demonstrates a commitment to ethical principles pertaining to providing or withholding of clinical care, confidentiality of patient information, informed consent, and businesses practices. Demonstrates sensitivity and responsiveness to patients’ cultures, age, gender, and disabilities.

System-based Practice:
Demonstrates an understanding of the contexts and systems in which health care is provided and the ability to apply this knowledge to improve and optimize health care. Practices cost effective health care and resource allocation that does not compromise quality of care.

Advocates for quality patient care and assists patients in dealing with system complexities. Partners with health care managers and providers to assess, coordinate and improve health care and affect system performance.

Administrative Activities:
May be asked to serve on at least one committee effort within the division and/or department.

Qualifications

M.D. Degree. Licensure by State of Maryland Board of Physicians. DEA Certification and Sate of Maryland Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) Certification. Credentialed at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Howard County General Hospital and related hospitals as necessary.

Physical Requirements:
Sitting, standing and walking for extended period of time. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
