The general nature or purpose of the job: Oversee and manage research projects and daily operations of a new research laboratory studying cancer biology and cellular DNA responses. Active participation in setting up and overseeing facilities and intellectual pursuits of a new research division.

The primary duties and responsibilities of the job: Makes intellectual contribution to scientific research interests of the lab. Applies independent thought to make decisions and collaborates with Principal Investigator. Develop, design and manage substantial research projects, coordinates own objectives and those of laboratory team. Perform sophisticated data analysis utilizing extensive knowledge base and varied methods experience. Act as a consultant to refine or adapt methodologies to fit research objectives. Collaborates in development of new technologies, protocols and uses of equipment. Co-authors publications. Contributes original thoughts, hypotheses, and analysis to write abstracts and manuscripts. Functions scientifically in lab similarly to post-doctoral fellow. Independently performs research assays specific to the research laboratory interests. Manage staff including recommendations for hire/fire, and performance evaluation. Enhances problem solving through interactions and discussions with collaborators or senior researchers at meetings and/or professional presentations. Makes decisions regarding research projects that may require assessment, revision of objectives, or altering scientific direction; considers resources and lab priorities when making decisions. Supervise lab including maintenance and troubleshooting of lab equipment, maintenance of biosafety, chemical safety and radiation safety records, compliance, management of waste disposal. Oversee lab spending and ensure adherence to budgets. Present at departmental/divisional meetings.

Machines and/or equipment used on the job, include % of time used:Computer, basic and advanced laboratory equipment like fluorescence microscope and flow cytometer, etc. - 75% of time.

Computer or other special needs for the position:Uses computer for data entry, data analysis, e-mails, research, etc.

Degree of independent action performed on the job:Will work independently in the lab ensuring progress of research and daily laboratory activities. Capable of exercising independent judgment while participating in the planning of experiments and evaluating and interpreting results.

Internal and external contacts required as part of the job:Internal and external contacts with faculty, staff, other researchers, vendors, state officials for regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field.

Related work experience: Four years experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques. Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Physical requirements for the job: Work produced is subject to precise measures of quantity and quality. Biohazardous or caustic chemicals may be present in this work environment, which mandate attention to safety consideration. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hands, arms. Ability to move about.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
