Position Overview

VISITING ASSISTANT PROFESSOR - Classics. The Department of Classics at the University of Kansas (www.classics.ku.edu) invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor in Greek Archaeology, to begin as early as August 18, 2019. This appointment is limited term for two years, with the option of a third year, based on need and availability of funding. This is a full-time VAP position with a 3:3 teaching load as well as research and service obligations (see below). Applicants are expected to have a PhD (or be ABD with the defense completed) in Classical Archaeology or an allied field, with ancient Greece as their field of expertise, by the start date of the appointment. We are seeking a scholar whose research and teaching in Greek Archaeology and Art complement our robust course offerings for the BA in Classical Antiquity and the new Classical Archaeology and Art option in our MA program. Desirable candidates will have significant archaeological fieldwork experience. In teaching, our new colleague would employ the collection of the Wilcox Classical Museum (www.wilcox.ku.edu), which relies on the archaeology faculty in the Department of Classics for its curatorship.

The Classics Department maintains an excellent undergraduate program and one of the top MA programs in the country. Classics enjoys close collaborative relationships with the University of Kansas departments of Anthropology; Art History; History; the Humanities Program; Jewish Studies; Museum Studies; Philosophy; Religious Studies; Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; and Theater and Film. The successful candidate will offer courses at the undergraduate and MA levels in the archaeological theory, methods, and history of Classical Archaeology (Greek and Roman periods); Greek Art and Architectural History; and Greek Civilization.

We are interested in candidates whose scholarship focuses on culturally responsive approaches that are conscious of diversity andequity perspectives. The successful candidate must be eligibleto work in the U.S. prior to the start of the position.


Job Description

Teaching (60%): Teach courses (3:3 teaching load) in undergraduate and graduate programs in the Classics department, and develop curriculum in the Classics Department. In addition, all faculty members are expected to advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students in the department and to serve on committees.

Research (30%): Maintain and sustain an active and productive program of research in field of specialization, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and present findings at professional conferences.

Service (10%): Service to the Department, the College, the University, and the profession of Classics exists in many forms from sitting on committees to directing programs.

Faculty members are expected to meet satisfactory standards of performance in all three areas of responsibility and to carry out those responsibilities in accordance with the Faculty Code of Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct.


Required Qualifications

Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (a) descriptions of research agenda and teaching philosophy in letter of application, (b) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in CV, (c) writing sample, and (d) information provided from professional references:
  1. PhD (or ABD status with the defense completed) in Classical Archaeology or an allied field, with ancient Greek as their field of expertise, by the start date of the appointment.
  2. Demonstrated ability to teach courses in Greek Archaeology and Art.
  3. Research focus on the results of archaeological fieldwork (excavation, survey, or digital archaeology), settlement or landscape archaeology, art history, architectural history, gender and visual studies, or museum studies.
  4. Evidence of engagement with ancient Greek material culture broadly conceived.
  5. Evidence of dedication to high-quality teaching and research.
