Job Description:

Primary duties of the Senior Counsel will be:

- Provide strategic legal advice and counsel to the University on business and technology ventures, contract interpretation, risk assessment, conflicts, university collaborations with government and industry, general intellectual property matters, inventions and start-up entities, and other strategic research, development and business initiatives of the University.

- Draft, negotiate, and review a wide variety of agreements, such as technology transfer and licensing agreements, research and other sponsored program agreements, academic and business agreements, information technology agreements and software licenses, distance learning and online education program agreements, and other University transactional documents.

- Oversee certain governance and regulatory matters, including international matters related to industry research, technology and academic endeavors, and vendor disputes.

- Serve as attorney liaison to the University of Florida Research Foundation board, provide subject matter-specific training to deans, administrators and faculty, and assist and handle other general legal matters as assigned.

In performing all duties, the Senior Counsel will adhere to the standards and expectations of the UF OGC and will keep the General Counsel appropriately informed of significant matters. This position’s work will maintain the highest standards of client service, communication, professionalism, collaboration, and accountability. This position is responsible for ensuring that his or her functions within the OGC are consistent with and further the mission of the University.

This position requires a very high degree of professional competence in the relevant areas, skill and integrity; the ability to practice to a high level of skill in client service, collaboration, professionalism, accountability; the ability to manage and prioritize a varied and heavy workload to timely accomplish the work; and the ability to collaborate with legal and non-legal personnel at all levels of the University and its affiliates. This position is expected to maintain the highest standards of legal practice and ethics in dealing with all persons within the University community as well as outside the University.

Advertised Salary:

Salary is negotiable; commensurate with experience

Minimum Requirements:

Law degree (J.D.) and four years experience as an attorney. Must be a member of the Florida Bar or become a member within twelve months of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Must have a JD from an ABA-accredited law school and must be an active member of the Florida Bar or become a member within 9 months of employment.

The Senior Counsel must have a minimum of five years of experience practicing law in a law firm, a research university, a technology development company, or a similar in-house position.

A deep and sophisticated level of substantive expertise in the primary areas relevant to the job responsibilities, a strong work ethic, and enthusiastic attitude is required.

The Senior Counsel must have excellent analytical ability, writing skills, listening and oral communications skills, client-service and interpersonal skills.
