Job Description:This is a 12-month, tenure-accruing, 80% research (Florida Agricultural Experiment Station) and 20% teaching (College of Agricultural & Life Sciences) appointment in the Horticultural Sciences Department, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS), at the University of Florida. The position will be filled at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. The successful candidate will lead a vigorous research program in breeding and genetics, with emphasis on blueberry cultivar development using a variety of approaches, including the use of molecular techniques if appropriate. The successful candidate is expected to release new blueberry cultivars for the Florida, the southeastern U.S., and other similar climates worldwide, manage and grow the robust entrepreneurial blueberry breeding enterprise at IFAS, secure extramural funding, publish research results in refereed journals, and establish industry contacts to keep abreast of developments and opportunities in the state. He/she will also be expected to advise and mentor graduate students in plant breeding and genetics, supervise dissertation and thesis research, serve on graduate committees, and publish with graduate students. Participation in undergraduate and graduate instruction in the Horticultural Sciences Department will also be required..
The successful candidate will participate actively in undergraduate and graduate education by chairing and serving on graduate committees, supervising thesis, dissertation and undergraduate research, and publishing research results with students. Faculty are encouraged to participate in professional development activities related to teaching and advising and may teach courses and seminars.
Because of the IFAS land-grant mission, all faculty are expected to be supportive of and engaged in all three mission areas—Research, Teaching and Extension—regardless of the assignment split specified in the position description.
Background Information:
For more than 50 years, the Horticultural Sciences Department (www.hos.ufl.edu) at the University of Florida (www.ufl.edu) has been a leader in plant breeding, particularly in the development of low-chilling cultivars. Our breeding programs are supported by royalties and licenses from released cultivars, which are grown world-wide. The University of Florida has strong programs in plant breeding and genetics, plant physiology, plant pathology, and molecular genetics that can provide support for the breeding program. The department has a 1000 acre state-of-the-art farm/greenhouse research facility at the Plant Science Research and Education Unit in Citra, FL. The Horticultural Sciences Department is a unit of the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (www.ifas.ufl.edu), one of the nation's largest agricultural and natural resources research and education organizations.

Minimum Requirements:Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Plant Breeding, Genetics, Crop Science, or related field. Successful candidates must be able to demonstrate research, teaching, and publication capabilities, as well as possess skills in oral and written communication. A commitment to the discipline of plant breeding as part of the mission of the land-grant system is essential. Familiarity with the workings of a plant breeding program is required; however, experience in woody plant breeding is not necessary.
Preferred Qualifications:Postdoctoral training and/or work experience is preferred.
