THE POSITION
Golden West College is currently seeking ­­ a full-time tenure track Accounting Instructor commencing with the 2018­­__ fall semester.  The primary teaching assignment involves accounting.  This assignment also includes curriculum and program development, participation in department, division, college committees, and participatory governance activities assuming leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole; collaboration across disciplines and the leveraging of student support resources; and participation in ongoing professional development.
The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, online or off campus and is subject to change as needed.  The ideal candidate for this position embraces the overall mission of the Coast Community College District, with a clear, focused commitment to supporting teaching and academic excellence, and student learning and success through the work of ­accounting.

Examples of Duties: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Provide instruction in Accounting:  financial accounting, managerial accounting, tax accounting, cost accounting, accounting information systems, and other accounting courses in auditing or advanced accounting in accordance with established course outlines.
2. Provide leadership in the development and revision of Accounting curriculum.
3. Participate in curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation; participate in and develop programs to measure student performance.
4. Maintain current knowledge in the subject matter areas.
5. Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.
6. Fulfill the professional responsibilities of a full-time faculty member including, but not limited to the following: teach all scheduled classes unless excused under provisions of Board Policy; follow the department course outlines; keep accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and progress; submit student grades according to established deadlines; post and maintain scheduled office hours; participate in departmental meetings and college and/or district-wide activities and committees as assigned.
7. Assignment may include day, evening, weekend, and online sections.
8. Update instructional methods and technologies as necessary to maintain current and relevant standards of pedagogy.

Qualifications and Physical Demands

Minimum:
Master's in accountancy or business administration with accounting concentration OR Bachelor's in business with accounting emphasis or business administration with accounting emphasis or economics with an accounting emphasis AND Master's in business, business administration, business education, economics, taxation, finance OR meet the equivalent qualifications established by the District, AND
  • Demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
  • Ability to contribute to campus and district-wide professional responsibilities and activities.
  • Ability to complement existing staff, student and community demographics in terms of professional and personal skills.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Educational and/or instructional preparation in accounting.
  • A minimum of one to three years of recent experience teaching accounting or accounting-related disciplines at the post-secondary level.
  • A minimum of five years of work experience in an accounting capacity in public accounting or private sector, preferably with managerial responsibilities over a group of direct reports.
  • Relevant industry work experience in a supervisory or managerial role with experience in a variety of areas such as general ledger maintenance, month-end work flow, receivables and payables management, compliance reporting, internal reporting, creation of budget and cost models, and accounting software and research tools.
  • Evidence of experience in curriculum development, including creating new courses.
  • Evidence of knowledge of and use of current and emerging educational technologies in today's learning environment.
  • Evidence of participation in professional development activities in the accounting profession and/or the education community.
  • Evidence of a strong commitment to academic excellence, quality instruction, student motivation, and student success.
  • Evidence of an ability to incorporate alternative instructional activities and exercises to achieve learning outcomes.
  • Evidence of participation in student success initiatives in a post-secondary setting.
  • Evidence of an ability to address the instructional needs of a diverse and frequently underprepared student population.
  • Evidence of an ability to effectively engage with and facilitate authentic learning for students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences.
  • Evidence of an ability to adapt teaching pedagogy to the knowledge level (developmental through transfer) and personality of each individual and class.
  • Evidence of an ability to self-reflect and respond to an evidenced-based assessment of student learning.

Conditions of Employment

For a full-time, two-semester position a maximum starting range of $50,519 to $86,130 is offered, based on the 2017-2018 salary schedule of $50,519 to $120,442. In addition, an annual stipend of $2,946   is offered for possession of an earned doctorate from an accredited institution.  The District provides medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee.

Physical Abilities
  • Requires the ability to function in a classroom and/or office environment performing work of primarily a sedentary nature with some requirement to move to about the classroom, campus and off-campus locales.  Requires the ability to use hearing and speech to make presentations to groups and carry on conversations over the phone and in person. Requires speaking skills to communicate with staff and students in on-on-one and small group settings, on the phone, and to distinguish sound prompts from various types of equipment.  Requires near visual acuity to read printed materials and computer screens.  Requires sufficient hand/arm/finger dexterity to retrieve work materials, operate a personal computer keyboard, and operate standard office equipment. Requires the ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Working Conditions
  • Work is performed indoors where minimal safety considerations exist.

Sabbatical Leaves

Academic Senate
The Academic Senate is the governing body at each of our colleges for making recommendations to administration and to our Board of Trustees with respect to academic and professional matters. Time to Refuel
Vacation
Classified, contract staff earn vacation days commensurate with years of service. Classified Management and Administrators earn 22 days vacation per year.

Sick Leave
All contract employees earn sick leave as outlined in the CA Education Code. Sick leave may be carried over from year-to-year and, upon retirement, unused sick leave may contribute to your PERS and STRS retiree benefit.

Holidays
The District observes 21 paid holidays per year.

Jury Duty, Bereavement, Military Leave
Coast grants contract employees called to jury duty a leave of absence, without loss of pay, for the entire length of required service. Other available leaves include bereavement from 3-5 days and military leaves of absence in accordance with applicable state laws.

Great Expectations
Pension Plans
The District participates in the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS) and the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) for contract employees. Non-contract employees participate in Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) plan for the first 1,000 hours of their employment.
Additionally, it is the policy of the Coast Community College District that contract employees who retire from the District with ten or more years of service be afforded the same group insurance benefits until 70 years of age. A Medicare Supplement or GAP plan is available to retirees and their spouses after age 70.

Annuities
The District maintains a program whereby qualified employees may request through Payroll to have a portion of his or her salary deposited under a tax sheltered annuity plan or an approved deferred compensation plan.
