The Department of Anthropology maintains a four-field anthropology curriculum with nearly 200 majors, supported by 15 full-time faculty, various part-time instructors, and five full time staff. It offers both minor and major baccalaureate degrees and a Master of Arts graduate degree program in anthropology with specialization in one of four sub-fields: socio-cultural, linguistic, archaeological, and biological anthropology. The undergraduate curriculum allows students to choose one of three degree concentrations: Culture, Language and Society (CLS); Archaeology and Biological Anthropology (ABA); or General Anthropology (GA). The Department also houses the Museum of Anthropology and Archaeological Curation Facility that maintain extensive ethnographic and archaeological collections. The Archaeological Research Center affiliated with the department provides opportunities for student training and student/faculty research in archaeology supported by external grants and contracts administered from the Center’s on-campus laboratory and other facilities. The Department sustains a long-standing commitment to increase the inclusiveness experienced by our students, while enhancing the breadth of our curricular and scholarly offerings at the local, national, and international levels as a Hispanic serving university in a community where 27.4% of the population are of Latinx heritage.

Essential Duties

• Work collaboratively with faculty to support and contribute to the department as a part of the ABA concentration, which is strongly grounded in evolutionary theory, and committed to empirically rigorous, scientific research and student training.
• Teach an upper-division, General Education, large enrollment course on the Archaeology of Mxico;
• Develop and teach upper division major courses in support of the major and the ABA Concentration including a regional prehistory and an anthropological theory course in their specialty;
• Engage in original research and disseminate their research through conference presentations, peer-reviewed publications, and other means;
• Perform department, college and university service, including student advising

Appointment Specifics Required Qualifications

1. Education: Ph.D. in Anthropology. ABD applicants will be considered however those currently possessing the required degree will be given priority. If ABD, all requirements for the doctoral degree must be completed by August 2020

Special Knowledge and Abilities:
2. Demonstrated expertise in Mesoamerican prehistory sufficient to teach large sections of upper division general education Archaeology of Mexico class.
3. Demonstrated evidence of ongoing field or laboratory work in an area of topical and research expertise at one or more field sites and/or curatorial facilities in Latin America.
4. Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse student population.

Experience:
5. Demonstrated experience in conducting original research leading to conference presentation(s) and/or peer-reviewed publication(s).

Preferred Qualifications

1. Experience and/or interest in the prehistory, bioarcheology, or ecology of hunter-gatherer and pre-state agricultural societies in Latin America.
2. Analytical specialization that complements and integrates effectively with existing faculty’s expertise and perspectives, including ethnoarchaeology, bioarcheology, paleoethnobotany, palynology, or geoarchaeology.
3. Experience and/or Interest in teaching graduate-level seminars.
4. Ability to develop upper division major’s courses on regional prehistory and anthropological theory.
5. Ability to develop a laboratory methods class in area of analytical expertise and to teach graduate seminars in archaeology.

Experience:
6. Demonstrated experience teaching undergraduate students.
7. Demonstrated experience mentoring graduate students.
8. Demonstrated experience supervising students in field and lab research.
9. Self-motivated with strong interpersonal skills capable of working collaboratively with faculty as a part of the ABA concentration.
