Job Description

The Department of Educational Psychology (EPS) is seeking to fill an Assistant Professor in Counseling - Student Affairs position at our Flagstaff Mountain campus beginning in August 2018. The position is a 9-month tenure-track faculty line. This position also has the opportunity for summer course teaching.

The EPS Department invites applicants who will contribute to our student affairs program's counseling-based emphasis with an enthusiasm for teaching at the graduate level. The successful candidate should also have a demonstrated potential for an active independent and collaborative research agenda and external research funding.

The MEd Counseling-Student Affairs program is over 30 years old and is the only counseling-student affairs program in the southwest region. The program meets CAS standards, and exceeds standards in theory to practice experiences in assistantship, fieldwork, practicum, and internship. The MEd prepares graduate students for careers in higher education by combining the foundational principles of counseling and student development with college impact research. We strive to educate graduate students with global awareness and multicultural competence who are equipped to serve as effective leaders in higher education for the 21 st century.

The two-year 48 credit hour experience is strengthened by close collaboration with departments throughout the university and local community college. Full-time students secure assistantships - about half of which are in residence life, one of the largest residential life programs in the west - our graduates are successful in securing employment. The program attracts strong and diverse applicants from throughout the United States, and is currently in a growth phase, having increased enrollment by over 50% in the past five years.

Responsibilities:
  • Teach graduate classes for the EPS programs, focusing on the Student Affairs program; possible course assignments include, but are not limited to: student services in higher education; the impact of college on students; college student development theory; vocational counseling and career development; multicultural counseling; campus crisis, ethics, and legal issues in student affairs; professional competencies in student affairs leadership; fieldwork, practicum, and internship
  • Teach in-person, with some blended or online courses to students in Flagstaff and to extended campus sites
  • Maintain an active independent and collaborative research agenda
  • Prepare and manage external grant proposals/programs
  • Supervise graduate student research
  • Recruit and Advise MEd Counseling - Student Affairs students
  • Fulfill service responsibilities to the department, college, and the profession
  • Work collaboratively with university departments to coordinate admissions, assistantship, fieldwork, practicum, and internship experiences for student affairs students

  • This is a tenure track, Assistant Professor, academic year position based in Flagstaff, Arizona, in the Department of Educational Psychology. The appointment will begin Fall 2018 academic semester. The Department of Educational Psychology is located within the College of Education and offers a PhD in Combined Counseling/School Psychology, EdS in School Psychology, Master's degrees in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Counseling-School Counseling, Counseling-Student Affairs, and Human Relations.     Minimum Qualifications

  • Earned Doctorate in Student Affairs, or closely related field, by date of hire
  • College teaching experience (can include college teaching as a graduate assistant)
  • Research experience (can include research assistant)


  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate of a counseling-based student affairs graduate program
  • Earned Doctorate from an accredited CACREP program
  • Two or more years of relevant teaching experience in counseling-based student affairs graduate courses
  • Evidence of strong scholarly productivity and the potential for future independent and collaborative scholarship, including success in seeking extramural grant support
  • Ability/experience or strong interest in recruiting, advising, and mentoring graduate students, including advisor for student research
  • Experience and skills to supervise student affairs graduate students in fieldwork, practicum, and internship sites throughout the college campus and local community college
  • Experience and skills in supervising, advising, and studying culturally diverse populations in the southwest, including rural, Hispanic, Latino, and Native populations
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with department chairs, other program directors/coordinators, faculty, staff, students, and associated members of the professional community
  • Active involvement or leadership roles in national associations (e.g., ACPA and NASPA)
  • Experience in networking/collaborating within and across colleges and universities
  • Ability/experience or strong interest in working with distance technologies, such as web-based instruction

    Background Information

    This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position.     Finally, each year the Northern Arizona University Police Department releases an annual security report. The report is a result of the federal law known as the Clery Act and contains policy statements that address the school's policies, procedures and programs concerning safety and security including policies for responding to emergency situations and sexual offenses. The report contains three years of data for Clery reportable crime statistics for the campus along with the most current year's Fire Safety Report, which includes policy statements and fire statistics for Flagstaff on-campus student housing.

    Salary

    $55,000 - $60,000 - Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications

    Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the Conditions of Faculty Service http://nau.edu/Provost/Resources-Policies/
    Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment.

    If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of employment. The long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following 90 days of employment.
