Agriculture and Natural Resources Department

INSTITUTION: The University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC) is one of five campuses comprising the University of Minnesota system. UMC is a four-year public university with an enrollment of 1,900 students of which approximately half are in residence and half are enrolled in online degrees.  The student body is diverse and comes from over 40 states and over 30 countries. POSITION: Full-time, nine-month tenure-track position in Agricultural and Natural Resources Aviation in the Agriculture and Natural Resources Department at the Crookston campus of the University of Minnesota starting August 15, 2016.  Salary and rank commensurate with qualifications and experience.  A competitive fringe benefits package is offered.


RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide program leadership to the established aviation program which combines agriculture, natural resources, and law enforcement with aviation. Deliver high-quality undergraduate instruction to students in the Aviation program. Deliver flight instruction and teach aviation academic courses such as, but not limited to: introduction to aviation, airplane aerodynamics, aircraft systems, basic attitude instrument flying, IFR procedures and policies, conventional aircraft operations, certified flight instructor, instrument certified flight instructor, conservation law enforcement, natural resources and law enforcement aviation applications, and agricultural application.

A successful candidate is expected to establish his/her own research program, with a focus on either agriculture, natural resources, or law enforcement aviation.  The candidate is expected to contribute to further develop current and future programs; advise students; participate in recruitment and retention efforts; help expand our network with the industry to benefit our programs, student experience, and student employment opportunities.  The candidate should be open to teach both on campus and online courses.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Doctorate or ABD in Aviation or related fields (natural resource-related field, criminal justice, biology, or law degree); FAA certified flight instructor (CFI) certificate and instrument instructor rating for single engine airplanes; substantial experience as Pilot in Command of Conventional Gear aircraft; effective communication skills; ability to relate complex concepts to diverse audiences; demonstrated cultural competency, and commitment to an experiential educational philosophy within the scope of the land grant mission.  Final job offer contingent upon complete background check and receipt of official transcripts.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience as a flight instructor or agency pilot; experience as aviator in agricultural application, natural resources, conservation law enforcement, general law enforcement, or teaching and/or research experience in academic institution, industry experience, experience/track record of seeking and successfully implementing externally funded projects and grants.
