Research Scientist and Science Educator Needed for a Science Education Non-Profit
Based in Colorado Springs
Position Title: Research Scientist and Science Educator
Reports To: Executive Director
FLSA Status Exempt
Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS) has immediate openings for the positions of Research Scientist and Science Educator. We seek creative, motivated individuals who share our commitment to improving science teaching and learning through innovation and research.
BSCS is a non-profit educational reform organization that develops, studies, and disseminates innovative approaches to science education. We have recently received funding for several studies to investigate how new forms of instructional materials and approaches to teacher professional learning can improve science teaching and learning. We are looking for experienced developers and researchers with expertise in science education to play important roles in these and other projects. We anticipate hiring a minimum of two individuals across the positions of Research Scientist and Science Educator.
At BSCS, Research Scientists are responsible for the design and implementation of research studies or program evaluations. At this time, we have a particular need for one or more Research Scientists with expertise in experimental research design, data collection, and quantitative analysis.
At BSCS, Science Educators are responsible for the design and development of instructional materials, the development and delivery of professional development for teachers, or both. At this time, we have a particular need for one or more Science Educators with expertise in the development and delivery of high quality professional development for science teachers.
Both Research Scientists and Science Educators work on project teams made up of individuals with diverse areas of expertise. They participate in proposal and report writing, and they have opportunities to publish in scholarly publications and present at professional meetings. In addition, Research Scientists and Science Educators typically manage one or more projects and supervise the work of other professionals.
Required Education and Experience
For both Research Scientist and Science Educator positions, a masters degree in science education or a related field and a minimum of five years experience in educational research, materials development, and/or professional development are required. A doctorate in science education or other educational specialty is desirable, as is experience with proposal writing, project management, and dissemination of innovation.
Appointment at the level of Senior Research Scientist or Senior Science Educator will be considered for candidates with 10 or more years of research, materials development, or professional development experience; a history of impact and influence through their work; and a track record of successful fund-raising for their work. It is expected that candidates for the rank of Senior Research Scientist or Senior Science Educator will bring one or more funded research projects to BSCS that cover at least 25% of their annual salary.

Specific Requirements for Research Scientist Position
A competitive applicant for the position of Research Scientist will have expertise in quantitative research methods and experience in the practical application of those methods. This expertise will include a coherent subset of the following areas: research design, power analysis, multi-level modeling, structural equation modeling, assessment development and psychometrics, inter-rater reliability monitoring, and meta-analysis. Although the focus of this position is quantitative research, applicants should also be comfortable with qualitative techniques, as most BSCS projects use a mixed methods approach. Experience teaching in K-12 schools or informal settings, developing instructional materials, and/or delivering teacher professional development are highly desirable for the position of Research Scientist.
Specific Requirements for Science Educator Position
Candidates for the position of Science Educator must have sufficient expertise in one or more science content areas to develop instructional materials or professional development programs across the K-12 spectrum. The ideal candidate will also be familiar with the findings of research on science teaching and learning in their area of science content expertise. Teaching experience in K-12 schools or informal settings and research or evaluation experience are highly desirable for the position of Science Educator.
