General Position Summary:

The Academic Director is responsible for the management of an academic program at University College. This position will manage the Organizational and Professional Communication program at University College; the position is a full-time, benefited position. The position is a non-tenured, appointed faculty position in the lecture series, and depending on the background and experience, rank will be at the rank of lecturer or senior lecturer.

Specifically, the responsibility of the director is to ensure the quality of the curriculum, faculty, and instruction within their respective program. To achieve this end, the Academic Director will coordinate efforts to develop, implement, and evaluate the academic curriculum for the program in response to the evolving demands of the profession and/or industry. The Academic Director assists in enrollment management efforts to achieve enrollment requirements set in the budget and to ensure growth and financial success of the program.

The Academic Director will also teach in at least one course in their respective program per academic calendar year. The role has inherent responsibility to provide advising to students concerning the program and their career as appropriate. In addition, the Academic Director represents the college at university and community events.

The Academic Director will respond to the evolving demands of the profession/industry, the needs of the adult professional students, and advances in educational technology. The Academic Director will ensure the quality of all written material and products originated for the program area(s). The Academic Director will work closely with faculty, program assistants, advisory board, and the Academic Quality Team in these efforts.

The Academic Director is responsible for the faculty hiring process, including recruitment, selection, training, mentoring, scheduling teaching, and evaluation of the program faculty. The Academic Director will work with the Program Assistant and the Academic Quality team to facilitate this requirement.

It is pertinent for this role to craft strategy and planning for their program area(s). They must ensure the implementation of strategies that support the mission and growth of the program area(s) by developing new programs, ensuring quality of educational methods as well as course content, incorporating innovative uses of technology in curriculum and course delivery, and implement and apply appropriate assessment techniques.

The Academic Director will also assist in advising students regarding program or career opportunities and problem solve academic matters. The Academic Director is required to instruct at least one course in the respective program per academic year.

This person will engage in positive, productive, professional, and interpersonal relationships throughout the University by establishing close working relationships with program advisors, support staff, marketing staff, student services staff, senior management, and constituent departments campus wide. The role requires diplomacy to establish and maintain cohesive, productive relationships at the greater university, with corporate partners and with the community.


Minimum qualifications include a Master's degree and demonstrated professional experience in the communications field and 5 Years of experience within the respective industry or field of concentration

The candidate must demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, supervision of others, management of budgets, and proficiency in computer applications are required.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret industry literature, professional journals, technical procedures, and/or government regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, course descriptions and outcomes, degree or program proposals, and procedurals manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from students, staff, and faculty.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in respective academic area
  • 5+ Experience in the higher education environment (administration or teaching) is desired but not required.
  • Experience in the area of professional and continuing education.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team-oriented environment as well as independently to meet deadlines, achieve goals, and provide program structure.
  • Ability to create and utilize analytics to inform decision-making.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret industry literature, professional journals, technical procedures, and/or government regulations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
