About the Position:
The Student Health Center (SHC) provides a variety of medical services, which are similar to outpatient care provided in a physician¿s group practice. These services for students include primary and urgent/acute care, individual health evaluation and guidance, health education, reproductive health and public health prevention programs. In addition, the SHC provides limited initial care for injuries of employees, and, if necessary, assists in referring such persons for ongoing care. Progressive integration of service, collaboration, competence, and efficiency in support of SJSU mission and values are key aims for all positions serving in the SHC. 

The Wellness and Health Promotion (WHP) department supports the mission of the Student Health Center by providing wellness and preventive health consultations, programs, and other services, which take place both within and outside of the SHC. Reporting to the Associate Director for Campus Wellness and working in collaboration with other SHC/Campus Staff and Faculty, the Wellness and Health Promotion Assistant Director (AD) will collaborate to develop strong, theory-informed, evidence-based programs and services based on relevant and measurable learning outcomes to improve individual and community health behaviors and status. The AD will support individual, group, and population-based health promotion initiatives for SJSU students and is expected to integrate cultural competencies and social justice concepts and principles.  

The AD will spearhead initiatives in support of WHP goals and objectives that align with established goals for the Division of Student Affairs and SJSU strategic plan. The AD may also be assigned oversight of a health content area (e.g., Violence Prevention, Sexual Wellness, Alcohol, Tobacco and other Drugs, Stress Management, Sleep, Men's Health, Happiness, Multicultural Health Issues, and/or Body Image).

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Collaborate to plan, implement, and evaluate theory informed, evidence-based health promotion strategies, policies, programs, and services.
- Conduct population-based assessments of health status, needs, and assets.
- Conduct environmental assessments of campus and community health needs and resources.
- Consult with supervisor to develop measurable goals and objectives for health promotion initiatives that align with goals and objectives of campus, division, SHC and WHP.
- Design, and/or select, and distribute educational materials (e.g., brochures, flyers) tailored to meet the needs of the diverse SJSU student population.
- Supervise graphic design student assistant; develop marketing plan that incorporates peer health educators.
- Provide advising and education on one or more subject areas to assist students in learning about and appreciating the importance of health.
- Apply evidence-based strategies aimed at reducing risky health behavior while coaching students on development/awareness of the effects of lifestyle choices on health status.
