I. About the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE)

The mission of the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE) is to partner with Stanford faculty, staff, and students to produce and educate knowledgeable, engaged citizens and creative, confident leaders for our future world. VPUE, as an organization, encompasses a central administrative office, and four major program areas: The Center for Teaching and Learning, Undergraduate Advising and Research, Stanford Introductory Studies, and the Bing Overseas Studies Program.

II. Summary of Position

The Director of Strategic Initiatives and Communications (DSIC) independently manages strategic initiatives and directs communications programs on behalf of the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE). The DSIC is responsible for driving complex project-based initiatives across the VPUE, including internal and external communication projects, website operations, support for new program development, and strategic initiatives; however, this is not a structured environment. This position will be required to manage and contribute to multiple, concurrent initiatives, including projects that are large in scope, long range, and external to VPUE. The DSIC must excel in all areas of strategy development, including project management, business analysis, problem solving, executive communication and consensus building. The DSIC will have regular and frequent interaction with VPUE senior leadership and will provide insightful analysis and recommendations to keep them informed of issues, milestones, and results.

III. Essential Job Functions

• Structure and execute strategic initiatives by identifying opportunities, developing work plans, gathering and synthesizing relevant data and developing final recommendations.
• Direct large, complex, cross-unit communications projects and strategic initiatives on behalf of VPUE.
• Oversee VPUE assessment, data analysis, and reporting efforts to support timely and informed decision making by the vice provost and senior staff.
• Develop and help execute comprehensive change management strategies and communication plans relative to project scope and stakeholders on a focused project; actively manage resistance to change.
• Lead the decision-making process to define VPUE communications and marketing strategies, and manage the execution of these strategies. Provide direction to others for implementation of VPUE strategic goals across the communications portfolio.
• Oversee the VPUE websites, photo archive (Sallie), newsletters, and other communications platforms and author content as needed.
• Manage the design and implementation of communications and strategic initiatives to ensure high customer and stakeholder satisfaction.
• Identify and source outside vendors and manage key vendor relationships.
• Prepare and manage program budgets.
• Manage the work of other employees, make hiring decisions, provide coaching, training and mentoring, manage performance and determine staffing needs.
• Build relationships with staff across the university and represent VPUE in campus wide initiatives.

IV. QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience:
• Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience. 7-10 years of relevant experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Demonstrated project/program management skills, including the ability to influence without authority and the ability to manage multiple projects/programs simultaneously.
• Demonstrated strengths in problem identification and problem-solving with experience making decisions and taking accountability for outcomes.
• The ability to work effectively with decision-makers across many levels of the organization.
• Experience launching new programs and initiatives.
• Demonstrated experience with various marketing elements (e.g. pricing, audience, channels, communication).
• Demonstrated experience managing budgets requiring excellent analytical skills.
• Demonstrated experience presenting to and taking direction from senior management.
• Polished written and oral communication skills to address a wide variety of audiences.
• Skilled at developing a staff of professionals. Includes selection, motivation, and leadership of staff, as well as evaluation and development.
• Familiarity with web software such as HTML, CSS and Drupal preferred.
• Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite applications (primarily InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver and Contribute) preferred.
• Ability to deal effectively with ambiguity and change, make quality decisions, set one’s own and others’ priorities, motivate staff, and multi-task.
• Demonstrated resilience, diplomacy, influence, relationship building, and problem solving skills in a variety of situations

Certifications and Licenses:
• Formal program management certification desired and helpful.
