Senior Director of Development

International Studies and Programs

Michigan State University seeks a results-oriented individual to lead its highly successful advancement team as the Senior Director of Development for International Studies and Programs. Throughout its 50+ year history, MSU's International Studies and Programs has provided leadership to facilitate cross-college and cross-content research and project collaborations. Such collaborations over time have resulted in a strong network of networks on the ground in countries facing the world's most pressing problems. MSU is a leader in addressing problems affecting the developing world- food, food security, health and education. As such, we have a strong track record with major national foundations and global corporations. MSU is poised to significantly expand its research and outreach global footprint, and the successful candidate will lead the efforts to secure funding from such major sources as well as from individuals.

The chosen candidate will be an exceptional fundraiser with experience with individual, major corporate and foundation donors. While the Senior Director has responsibility for guiding the full fundraising agenda, his/her primary focus will be securing principal level grants from corporations and foundations in support of MSU's international agenda. He/She should be an accomplished motivator and mentor, an effective manager of people, and a visionary leader who has a proven track record in successfully implementing comprehensive development programs. He/she should also have a significant track record of success working with global corporations and major national and international foundations. This is an exciting opportunity for a seasoned fundraiser/manager who thrives on fundraising and who wishes to serve in a leadership role for one of the preeminent development programs at Michigan State University.

Serving as the program's chief development officer, the Senior Director will maintain a personal prospect portfolio of principal gift prospects (primarily corporate and foundation) and employ an aggressive, strategic moves management program to ensure constant positive movement along the development pipeline. Leading by example, the Senior Director will oversee a team comprised of a full-time development officer and a development/alumni relations professional, and work closely with the Dean, senior administrators, and volunteer leadership to ensure that MSU's International Studies and Programs reaches its full philanthropic potential.

As MSU strategically positions itself to enter its second billion-dollar plus campaign, the Senior Director will assume a leadership role in planning and spearheading a campaign effort focused on programmatic, endowment, facility and expendable support. This includes recruiting and training volunteers, conducting a needs assessment of programs, preparing case statements, identifying and cultivating prospects, developing and reviewing proposals, and actively soliciting contributions.

Required: A Bachelor's degree; Communications, Public Relations, Marketing and/or Business preferred. Knowledge of a foreign language and/or experience living abroad is highly desirable. Demonstrated experience operating within multiple cultural contexts. Eight years of successful fundraising experience with individual, corporate and foundation donors (preferably in higher education). Several years at a director or manager level is highly desirable.   Experience in related fields such as public relations or marketing may be taken into consideration. Demonstrated organizational, interpersonal and written/oral communications. Advanced degree preferred. Working knowledge of tax laws affecting charitable giving. Travel involving automobile. Extensive international travel required.
