Position Summary

The Director of Development leads, in concert with the Assistant Dean, the fundraising activities of the college. Specific responsibilities include face-to-face visits, proposal development, identification and solicitation of major gifts ranging from $25,000 to $250,000 from individuals, corporations and foundations. In addition, the Director develops annual fundraising plans based on the unit’s priorities as identified by the Dean. The Director provides oversight of the college’s annual giving program.



Job Duty Function
Creates opportunities for major gifts by:

Job Duties/Responsibilities
• managing portfolios of current and future major gift prospects ($25,0000+);
• making a certain number of face-to-face visits and total contacts a month (as determined by college);
• preparing strategies for these prospects that include volunteers, vice presidents and other university employees;
• initiating activities that will bring major gift prospects closer to the UI;
• preparing solicitation proposals;
• participating as a member of the development staff in prospect management meetings;
• serving as a liaison to the Grants and Contracts Office for the college;
• reviewing lists of alumni and friends through group and individual meetings to increase the prospect base

Development programs for President's Circle gifts of $2,500+ by:

• working with staff to solicit and manage selected high-end annual fund prospects;
• providing oversight of other annual gifts in coordination with the UI’s Annual Giving Office

Supports the dean by:

• developing annual goals and objectives for development;
• developing a college-wide fundraising plan in support of the college and UI’s strategic plan;
• identifying volunteers to serve on the Advisory, Development and other boards as appropriate



Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • 3-5 years full-time professional experience in fundraising or related area

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

  • Demonstrated interpersonal relationship skills

  • Effective organizational and marketing skills

  • Familiarity with database computer systems and microcomputer applications

  • Willingness to travel and work odd hours and weekends



Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with volunteer boards and committees

  • Public relations or marketing experience

  • Strong knowledge of development activities, preferably in higher education

  • Experience or education in one of the college’s disciplines

  • Experience in grant writing
