Job Summary:

The Assistant Vice Chancellor, UCI Health Advancement (AVCHA) is responsible for providing leadership and strategic planning for Health Advancement programs and operations in coordination with the UCI University Advancement (UCIUA) division. Included in the portfolio are the School of Medicine, UCI Medical Center (UCIMC), programs in nursing, pharmaceutical science, public health, and numerous accompanying institutes, centers and clinics. A critical role is participating in the successful conclusion of the current campus-wide $1B "Shaping the Future" campaign. Future campaigns are planned and anticipated. UCI Health Sciences (UCIHS) raise approximately $50M annually in new gifts and commitment. This amount is expected to double in the coming decade.

The AVCHA is responsible for implementing innovative fundraising strategies and best fundraising practices in an academic medical center, and will provide overall management and budgeting for the fundraising teams associated with UCIHS.

 The AVCHA will work closely with leaders of UCIUA, School of Medicine, UCIMC, and the UCIHS to design and execute development strategies for individuals, grateful patients, alumni, friends, corporations, and foundations in support UCIHS key priorities. This position also consults with senior leadership on philanthropic, contractual, and intellectual property components with industry to further the programmatic and research goals of UCI.

 The AVCHA reports directly to the Vice Chancellor of University Advancement (VCUA), with closely collaborated dotted lines to the Vice Chancellor of Health Sciences/Dean of the School of Medicine (VCHS) and the CEO of UCI Medical Center (CEO UCIMC) to facilitate strategic alignment that maximizes fundraising. This person will play a strategic advising role on the senior management teams of the VCUA, VCHS and CEO UCIMC. 

 This position oversees identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding of individuals and entities able to make major gifts to UCIHS. All efforts are coordinated among schools and programs within UCIHS plus other university entities and advancement personnel, especially in UCIUA.  

 The AVCHA will mentor and coach the Health Sciences development directors and their respective support staff through an annual planning process to solicit principal, major and annual gift donors and continually identify opportunities to strengthen, leverage and engage Health Sciences? numerous advisory boards in meaningful ways. The AVCHA provides primary direction to development officers and staff and strategic guidance to develop and implement annual performance plans and standards to achieve the fundraising and campaign goals.  

The AVCHA will maintain a portfolio of 25 prospects and donors for cultivation and solicitation, focusing on individuals and entities with capacities of $5M, or more.  

The AVCHA will work closely with the VCHS, dean of the school of medicine, CEO UCIMC, and related directors, faculty and senior UCI administrators and University Advancement staff to create awareness, build relationships, and generate support for the priorities of UCI and of the Health Sciences.

In concert with UCI Strategic Communications and Marketing, and UCIMC Communications, devise innovative methods for broadening the UCIHS visibility as centers for excellence and as significant philanthropic organizations, locally and nationally.
 

Specific Responsibilities
Supervise directly or indirectly over 40 fund raising professionals, including senior development professionals, and support staff, focusing on issues of program development, organization, direction, motivation, and evaluation.
 
Oversee all administrative processes in matters regarding personnel, budget, equipment, staff organization, etc., for the Health Advancement office and other satellite offices when appropriate.  Oversee annual budget process for all Health Advancement program components.
 
Personally cultivate and solicit prospects at the $1M level and above.  Complete at least six (6) face-to-face visits per month.
 
Manage an overall plan for volunteer involvement for UCIHS.  Provide advice and counsel to VCUA, VCHS, CEO UCIMC, program directors of nursing science, pharmaceutical sciences, and public health, and directors of the accompanying institutes, centers and clinics on appropriate utilization of volunteers.  Direct organization and growth of volunteer boards and committees for appropriate areas with the primary objective of meeting fund-raising goals.  Meet regularly with volunteer leadership to develop strategies that increase philanthropic investment in UCIHS.
 
Cultivate cooperative working relationships among key faculty members and development colleagues of the Health Advancement program and other units across campus.
 
Develop alumni relations strategies that support the development and overall goals of the School of Medicine and the programs of nursing science, pharmaceutical science, and public health and other Health related areas as necessary
Advise and mentor Health Advancement officers, focusing on issues of professional direction and development, motivation, evaluation, and individual growth.
 
Consult with vice chancellors, deans, physicians, and other unit heads regarding development priorities and provide guidance and support on plans and strategies to achieve identified priorities.   Along with appropriate fund raising officers, increase the involvement of medical and health faculty members in all aspects of the development program. Strengthen faculty commitment to and understanding of the development program, and promote the medical and health faculty's active participation in the process.
 
Develop a fully-integrated annual business plan and zero-based budget for all health affairs development and multidisciplinary initiatives, as well as the campaign, to successfully achieve the respective functional areas annual goals and benchmarks.  
 
In partnership with the Assistant Vice Chancellor, University Development, review and analyze the ongoing effectiveness of the university s fund-raising programs.  Identify opportunities for increased program efficiency, effectiveness, and expediency across all unit program activities.
 
In partnership with VCUA meet annual and campaign fundraising goals and benchmarks.
 
Coordinate development and execution of creative strategies to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward principal and major gift donors for UCIHS.
 
Participate as key member of the University Advancement senior leadership team, ensuring that health affairs development priorities are integrated into University Advancement s strategic plan and are consistent with UCI s strategic plan.
 
Meet regularly with Health Advancement staff to provide guidance and counsel on individual performance plans.  Implement career mapping and other talent management programs and ensure a progressive management strategy is in place in order to recruit, retain, and develop top talent.
 
Directly and indirectly supervise development officers and provide oversight for:

Developing strategies to direct and manage comprehensive development programs to support the University's mission and campaigns.
 
Coordinating contacts with assigned prospects.
 
Facilitating relationships between potential and current prospects and with UCI s development officers in academic units, and appropriate campus administrative staff.
 
Developing strategies to move prospects closer to soliciting and closing gifts using a moves management prospect development system.
 
Developing annual business plans and budgets for the functional areas for inclusion in University Advancement s overall development and budget plans.
 
Represent UCI at various community events, activities and professional organizations, as requested.
 
Relationships
The Assistant Vice Chancellor reports to the Vice Chancellor, University Advancement.    
 
Work with all members of the University Advancement senior leadership team and medical and health development officers to coordinate fundraising campaigns or projects in accordance with campus and University fundraising policies.
Work directly with CEO, VC/Dean, and other Health Science Leaders including faculty, physicians and staff campus-wide and other related entities, as needed.
 
Advise, inform and work with the Chancellor; Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor; and Vice Chancellor of University Advancement.
 
Advise, inform and work with all of the University Advancement Areas of Excellence.

Participate in the campus prospect management system, development officer forums and University Advancement planning meetings.
 
Scope 
In close partnership with all members of the University Advancement senior leadership team is responsible for the achievement of annual and campaign fundraising goals.
 
The AVCHA will provide leadership to and supervise the health advancement team who range in classification from administrative assistant to management and senior professional levels.
 
Is responsible for management of an annual budget of approximately $4 million.
 
Is responsible for compliance with all UCI policies and procedures including but not limited: solicitation and acceptance of gifts, alumni and support group policies, and naming policies.
 
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Required:

Able to use donor software programs such as Ellucian Advance.  Proven ability to use MS Office Suite and database programs.   Knowledge of Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
 
Possess good judgment, confidentiality and discretion communicating with colleagues and constituents.
 
Proven management experience and skills to effectively organize, direct, motivate, mentor, and evaluate other professional and support staff and volunteers is essential.  
 
Ability to establish objectives, set performance standards, and organize and motivate development staff to achieve fundraising goals with a strong bottom-line orientation.  
 
Ten (10) years or more of demonstrated and documented experience with university development program planning, including principal gifts and senior management.  Experience in health sciences fundraising, preferably in an academic medicine setting.

Demonstrated leadership skills to inspire confidence as well as to motivate others.

Have an impressive track record of major donor portfolio management, as well as the cultivation and solicitation of major gifts from individuals as well as from corporations and foundations.  
 
The ability to conceptualize and implement development programs of large size and complexity, including the ability to envision and articulate future direction.  
 
Knowledge and understanding of shared academic governance and its relationship to an effective fundraising program in higher education, especially academic medicine.
