Position: The University of Iowa's nationally recognized graduate program in Higher Education & Student Affairs (HESA) seeks candidates for an Associate or Full Professor tenure-track faculty position who would also serve as Director of the Center for Research on Undergraduate Education (CRUE). This is an academic year appointment in the Department of Educational Policy and Leadership Studies to begin no later than August 2015.
Description: We are seeking an established scholar in the field of higher education to contribute to our programs research and teaching strengths and also to direct CRUE. The ideal candidate will have a strong record of scholarship, with an emphasis on quantitative social science methods. This scholar will teach masters and PhD courses, mentor students, and will be expected to seek significant grants to underwrite doctoral student support.
The University of Iowas HESA Program is regularly ranked among the nations best. The Ph.D. curriculum covers three major areas: 1) Higher Education Administration and Policy; 2) Teaching, Learning, and the College Experience; and 3) Diversity, Equity, and Foundations of Higher Education. The foci of the M.A. curriculum are student affairs administration, and higher education administration and policy. HESA faculty are productive researchers and regularly present their work at national conferences and publish in leading scholarly publications.
The HESA program values include: engaging authentically with civility and respect, critical examination of issues of justice and social change, holistic reflection, exploring the classic and critical contexts of postsecondary education and cultivating a caring and dynamic community.
CRUE has been the home to numerous national studies of college student outcomes. Dr. Ernest Pascarella, a leading scholar on college impact, currently serves as the Director of CRUE, several HESA faculty maintain affiliate roles within CRUE, and multiple doctoral students hold grant-funded research assistantships through CRUE. Dr. Pascarella plans to serve as a faculty affiliate within CRUE for several more years.
Education Requirement: Earned doctorate
Required Qualifications: (1) evidence of scholarly productivity with an emphasis on quantitative social science methods; (2) evidence of teaching skills; (3) a strong record of securing external funds for research, training, and program development; (4) commitment to graduate student advising and mentoring; (5) ability to work collaboratively and collegially with diverse faculty and student populations; and (6) commitment to developing and teaching online courses.
Desirable qualifications: (1) demonstrated expertise in quantitative research methods; (2) ability to contribute to the diversity of the faculty; (3) demonstrated professional involvement; (4) experience directing a research center; and (5) experience teaching and/or designing online courses.
Responsibilities: The successful applicant will maintain an ongoing program of research, teach graduate courses, advise M.A. and Ph.D. students, and supervise graduate student research and practica. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to pursue and secure external funding, and participate in the activities of professional organizations and direct the Center for Research on Undergraduate Education.
