DePaul University in Illinois
|Date Posted||July 29, 2014|
DePaul University, the nation’s largest Catholic institution, with a focus on teaching and service, is considered a model for suffusing organizational culture with the mission of the institution. Drawing from the heritage of St. Vincent de Paul, the mission of the institution is to serve urgent human needs, and part of that mission is manifested as a special concern for educating first generation and traditionally underserved students. With a pervasive commitment to diversity and inclusivity, DePaul welcomes all people and all faiths and creeds. The faculty, learned, yet learning, gives substance to the mission of the university. In addition to scholarly inquiry, creative force, and intellectual efforts, the faculty works to realize each student’s potential and to recognize the God-given dignity of each person. The nation’s third largest city, Chicago is an important asset to DePaul. The university has always benefited from its location – from the incredible opportunities the city affords for exploration, for civic and artistic involvement, and for internships. The principal distinguishing marks of the university are its Catholic, Vincentian, and urban character.
Among the nation’s 10 largest private universities, DePaul (www.depaul.edu) consistently achieves top-tier ranking from U.S. News & World Report. With enrollment approaching 25,000, the university offers more than 275 graduate and undergraduate programs as well as online programs and awards nearly 7,000 degrees annually. Approximately 100 of the programs are in graduate and doctoral studies, and more than 88% of the faculty hold terminal degrees. In addition to the iconic 40-acre main campus in the heart of Lincoln Park and the Loop campus downtown, DePaul has three suburban campuses and multiple international locations. In 2013, the annual budget was $559 million.
The provost is responsible for the intellectual life of the institution, including the quality of education, research, and service. The provost serves as the second in command and day-to-day leader for much of the institution, working in partnership with the president, Rev. Dennis H. Holtschneider, C.M, and the executive vice president, Robert L. Kozoman. Appointed by the board of trustees and reporting to the president, the provost has a broad range of responsibilities that encompass both the long-term academic development and performance of the university. The provost oversees Academic Affairs, which includes the deans and activities of 10 schools and colleges (Business, Communication, Computing and Digital Media, Education, Law, Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Music, New Learning, Science and Health, and Theatre); Enrollment Management and Marketing; Student Affairs; and Teaching and Learning Resources. The provost is responsible for ensuring the university’s financial vitality through its academic program and enrollment strategies. The provost also staffs the Academic and Student Affairs Committee of the board of trustees.
DePaul recently completed a $325 million campaign, “Many Dreams, One Mission,” and in 2012, the university launched its current strategic plan, Vision 2018. The provost will work with the rest of the university community and provide academic leadership to realize the five major goals of Vision 2018: 1) enhance academic quality and support educational innovation; 2) deepen the university’s distinctive connection to the global city of Chicago; 3) strengthen DePaul’s Catholic and Vincentian identity; 4) foster diversity and inclusion; and 5) assure a business model that builds the university’s continued strength and educational excellence.
The provost of DePaul University must deeply respect the institution’s Catholic, Vincentian, and urban identity and carry out its mission and values. The provost must have a high regard for the practice and tradition of collegial, shared governance, with a particular concern for transparent decision making. The institution seeks a leader who will protect and encourage DePaul’s innovative character. Dedicated to students and student success, the provost will strengthen academic quality, teaching excellence, scholarly research, service, and diversity. The provost will be instrumental in implementing learning goals that empower students to integrate and apply their knowledge in multiple ways. The requirements for the position include a terminal degree, significant senior managerial experience in higher education, and a notable of record of scholarly contributions and teaching. Above all, the provost must be a person of integrity whose personal interactions embody respect for and appreciation of the dignity and worth of all individuals.
