Florida International University (FIU) is seeking a dynamic and innovative leader to serve as chairperson of the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME). Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field and must possess credentials that meet the qualifications for appointment at the rank of Full Professor, based on a substantial record of scholarly work, excellent record of extramurally funded research, professional service, and the demonstrated ability to provide significant leadership and vision to a growing academic department. Successful candidates are expected to develop a high-quality funded research program and must be committed to excellence in teaching at both the graduate and the undergraduate levels.

The Mechanical and Materials Engineering department ( has 20 faculty members who support its offerings of BS (ABET accredited) in Mechanical Engineering, MS and PhD in both Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Engineering. The department has over 700 undergraduates and 75 graduate students. The department’s faculty research areas include thermal, fluid, and energy systems, mechanics, materials, robotics, and manufacturing.

The department has funding from Federal agencies and from the private sector. The major centers allied with the MME department are the Advanced Materials Research Institute (AMERI –, the Motorola Nano-fabrication facility including class 100 cleanroom, and the Center for Study of Materials under Extreme Conditions (CeSMEC – and the Engineering Manufacturing Center (EMC).
