This position is contingent upon the continuation of work and/or funding.

Position Responsibilities

Position Summary
This position will design, develop, and maintain complex software systems to support research computing. This position will develop and maintain research-oriented database and web applications under the direction of a Technology Operations Manager within the Northwest Knowledge Network (NKN) and will work with other NKN staff members to efficiently resolve reported application errors. This position will actively collaborate with numerous colleagues both internal and external to the University of Idaho through the NSF EPSCoR Western Consortium for Watershed Analysis, Visualization, and Exploration (WC-WAVE) project.


Job Duty Function
Design and Develop Complex Software Systems for Research Computing Applications

Job Duties/Responsibilities
• Identifying functional requirements through functional analysis and client interactions.
• Developing software changes based on documented functional specifications.
• Applying best practices of coding standards and guidelines to all developed software for complex systems and subsystems.
• Unit testing all software changes in an approved pre-production environment.
• Designing and developing complex software interfaces between internal and external applications and the development of SOA adaptors for connecting data management and data visualization components within the WC-WAVE project.
• Maintaining good software configuration management using standard processes.
• Leading code reviews with technical staff for new or revised software modules.
• Clearly and thoroughly documenting all software code changes.
• Completing assigned tasks on time as identified by formal project plans.
• Regularly reporting task status to the Technology and Data Services Manager.
• Collaborating with Technology and Data Services Manager and external WC-WAVE colleagues (in Nevada and New Mexico) on system design changes.
• Analyzing or authoring technical specifications on new and/or existing system upgrades.

Support Daily Operations at EPSCoR and Northwest Knowledge Network

Job Duties/Responsibilities
• Responding to high-level application problems and unplanned outages
• Developing data transfer scripts as needed.
• Managing multiple aspects of application and data-based issues.
• Manage planned service outages with the NKN staff and clients.
• Monitoring critical processes for successful completion.
• Collaborating in project management with the Technology Manager, Project Manager, and colleagues from the regional WC-WAVE project.

Provide Assistance to Other NKN Software Development Staff

Job Duties/Responsibilities
• Mentoring junior-level developers in coding techniques and development standards.
• Participating in design discussions with supervisors and senior developers.
• Assisting other NKN developers with major software implementations.

Develop and Maintain Application Security

Job Duties/Responsibilities
• Ensuring that all developed code utilizes appropriate application security structures
• Minimizing dependencies on non-application based database privileges
• Minimizing the use of sensitive personal information (SPI) where possible
• Reporting any undocumented SPI processes to the Technology Manager

Maintain Skills Needed to Support Research Applications

Job Duties/Responsibilities
• Evaluating new technical products in test environments
• Reviewing available technical documentation and online sources
• Attending professional training and conferences
• Traveling to and/or participating in EPSCoR WC-WAVE meetings, conferences, and working groups.

Position Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a Bachelor’s Degree (Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or related field), or equivalent experience. Minimum three years of experience programming in C/C++/C#, Perl, PHP, Python, or Java in a SQL database environment.

Demonstrable experience with the following specific technologies:
• UNIX operating systems, especially Linux.
• JavaScript

• Ability to work with minimal direction from senior staff
• A solid understanding of relational database concepts
• Experience in identifying and resolving technical issues
• Experience interacting with clients to determine requirements,
• Experience providing technical assistance for database management systems
• Disciplined approach to following procedures and completing tasks.
• Experience working with application-based security models and coding techniques to prevent software exploits such as SQL injection.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with the following technologies:
• PostgreSQL
• Microsoft SQL Server
• Drupal or similar content management system (CMS)
• Scientific and Geospatial Metadata Standards (e.g. ISO-19115, FGDC, EML, etc.)
• GIS systems (e.g. ESRI ArcGIS), including Standard Geospatial Web Services (OGC WMS, WFS, etc.)
• Service-Oriented Architectures (SOAs)
• XSLT, Perl, Java, PHP, Python
• Apache HTTPD
• Apache Tomcat
• Mobile development technologies
• Software development and versioning tools (CVS, Git, Subversion, etc.)

Experience with academic, scientific research and working with scientific researchers.

Solid experience in structured development environments with exposure to formal requirements gathering, coding, configuration management, and testing methodologies.
