The UCLA Department of History is seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Graduate Career Officer (GCO) to initiate a new graduate career development program at UCLA.  The program will focus on enhancing, coordinating, and building opportunities for the Departments graduate students to engage in a wide range of career paths, including but not restricted to the academy. Working closely with the Departments Chair, Vice Chair for Graduate Studies, and Director of the Public History Initiative, the candidate will work with faculty, staff, the History Graduate Student Association (HGSA), the History Board of Advisors, and other campus and community entities to prepare students for a range of careers in arenas such as publishing, libraries and archives, arts and cultural organizations, non-profit organizations, government agencies, and private industry.  In keeping with the key tenets of the Expanding Career Horizons project of the American Historical Association, the GCO will assist graduate students in developing the skills (e.g., quantitative and digital literacy, grant-writing, interviewing techniques) to communicate effectively with a wide range of audiences in a variety of media.  The new GCO will also tailor activities that build on the UCLA History Departments particular location, strengths, and commitments including its existing collaborations with digital humanities projects, professional schools, area museums, and nonacademic employers.   




Demonstrated skills in project management, leadership, organization, and presentation.  Desire and ability to undertake initiatives and see them through to completion.  Excellent writing skills.  Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills.  Ph.D. in History and proficiency with digital and new media preferred. 


This position will begin August 2014 and will continue through July 2017, pending satisfactory progress.
