The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University is presently seeking a Major Gifts Officer who is responsible for developing and managing LDEOs major gift efforts.
Duties and responsibilities include:
- Raising endowment, capital, and ongoing support for the Observatory. Develop and manage budgets to support major gift efforts.
- Identifying and cultivating major gift prospects, building a robust prospect pool for LDEO consisting of those interested in the issues that LDEO addresses, especially scientific research.
- Seeking and closing major gifts from new and existing individual, corporate and foundation prospects to support strategic initiatives, endowment and unrestricted funds.
- Assisting in management of supportive functions, including Board functions and events, publications, tracking activity, and supervising staff when applicable.
Requirements include a Bachelors degree and a minimum of five years related work experience required. Knowledge of professional data-driven fund-raising principles and practices, self-motivation, collegiality, and a high-level of professionalism are required. Must be able to deal effectively with a wide range of people in all types of occasionally difficult situations. Must be highly organized, detail oriented, and efficient. Must have a track record of closing major gifts, especially endowed gifts, as part of a capital campaign. Must have a strong and tenacious work ethic. Must be collaborative and results-oriented and able to listen carefully. Must have the ability and willingness to travel up to 20 percent of the time, primarily within the United States. Demonstrated ability to forge strong working relationships with internal and external constituencies and to bring new supporters to LDEO required. Familiarity with natural sciences and basic science research is highly preferred.
