The Office of Strategic Communication is seeking a Senior Director for News Media Relations who will provide strategic leadership for university-wide news media relations and issues management functions and plan and direct comprehensive efforts to identify and earn news media coverage of themes and stories that support institutional brand/position and top priorities. Working under the general executive direction of the Vice President for Strategic Communication, the Senior Director will develop, model and implement a proactive media engagement strategy as well as cultivate relationships with principal, high-level editors and producers and establish productive and trusting relationships with campus leaders and key sources in all major administrative and academic areas.


The Senior Director for News Media Relations will create and execute an annual plan for earned media coverage - working closely with the Senior Director for Marketing Communications to assure that earned media strategy is closely aligned to strategies for paid, direct and shared media; create media coverage plans for specific high-priority events and opportunities; and personally manage high-profile, high-risk and high-opportunity stories with message development that may include serving as institutional spokesperson.


Required qualifications are a Bachelors degree (Masters preferred) preferably Business, Marketing, Journalism, Mass Communications, Advertising, Public Relations, English, History or a related field; at least 7 years work in a professional or managerial role in news media relations (PR) or a closely related field (for example: marketing communications, journalism, brand management, advertising or sales management); experience supervising people and leading teams; experience planning and directing efforts to earn news coverage to support an organizations goals; experience serving as a media spokesperson in high-pressure, high-risk situations; and demonstrated experience working effectively in a diverse environment and/or demonstrated commitment to promoting a diverse environment.


Desirable qualifications include a track record of building professional relationships with staff, organizational leaders, journalists, and key influencers; outstanding verbal and written communication skills; experience developing strategic, research-based communication plans; and experience in higher education, health care, government or non-profit organizations.


Salary is $95,000 to commensurate. Application deadline is July 25, and screening will begin immediately. Projected start date is October 15, 2014.
