A Fab Lab is an advanced digital fabrication suite of computer-controlled manufacturing machines, paired with components and tools for circuit design and micro-controller programming for electronics applications. Fab Labs began as the educational outreach component of MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms, and research into digital fabrication, and are quickly becoming tools to advance and teach complex STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) curricula to students around the world. The Fab Foundation has established over 250 Fab Labs around the world, and CSUB has been chosen as the host of the next Fab Lab.
The successful candidate will run the Fab Lab on a day-to-day basis and mentor students, teachers, and community members through their projects and ideas. Duties will include establishing protocols for safe and effective use of the lab, monitoring of safety conditions, equipment maintenance, supplies inventory, record keeping, budget management, develop programs, and maintain schedule.
DUTIES: The Fab Lab Coordinator will be responsible for managing the use of the space, the maintenance and support of the equipment, and maintaining partnerships with external organizations. This position will work closely with faculty, staff and students to support the development and operation of programs that serve the Museum’s school, community, and public audiences. The position will report directly to the Dean of NSME.
This person will be responsible for:
• Managing all aspects of the daily operation and use of the Fab Lab.
• Collaborating with and supporting program teams in the development of new Fab Lab programming.
• Managing the delivery of Fab Lab programs, including learning experiences for school, community and public groups in the Fab Lab.
• Managing the training and certification of all staff, volunteers, interns, and guests on the use of the Fab Lab software, computers and manufacturing equipment.
• Lead staff, volunteers, and interns working in the Fab Lab.
• Providing technical support for Fab Lab hardware and software.
• Serving as a liaison with internal staff, external program partners and members of the global Fab Lab network.
• Participating as team member in assigned working groups and project teams as assigned.
• Work with CASE management and External Affairs staff to develop funding proposals and reports to donors.
• Maintain departmental responsibilities (report preparation, meetings, email, phone, etc.).
• Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Equivalent to four years of recent (within 3 years), professional work experience providing support services in a directly related unit or discipline.
Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in Engineering, STEM or Education with significant technical experience may be substituted for one year of the required professional experience (attach copy of transcripts to employment application to demonstrate qualifications).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: It is preferred that incumbent possess a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, STEM, or Education with significant technical experience (attach copy of transcripts to employment application to demonstrate qualifications), and two years of recent (within 3 years), professional experience providing support services in a directly related unit or discipline. Additionally preferred qualifications include: bilingual in Spanish; supervisory and teaching experience; experience with image editing, CAD/CAM applications, and design software; experience running and maintaining PCs, LANs and experience in Linux; experience using manufacturing and rapid prototyping technology and equipment.
