Director of the Office for International Students and Scholars

Michigan State University invites applications and nominations for the position of Director, Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS). OISS provides support services to over 7,000 international students and more than 1000 visiting international scholars annually. Services include:

  • Advising on and facilitating compliance with U.S. immigration regulations
  • Conducting orientations and other special programming that help international students and scholars integrate into and adjust to the academic, cultural and social life of MSU
  • Serving as a liaison between MSU and U.S. government agencies, foreign embassies, sponsors and educational foundations that support international students and scholars
  • Contributing to the internationalization of MSU by providing opportunities for growth through cross-cultural interactions


The Director provides leadership for developing and implementing OISS policies and practices for the Universitys support services for international students, scholars and accompanying family members. The Director must be knowledgeable regarding government regulations that pertain to non-immigrants who come to the U.S. for the purposes of study, teaching and research. The post-holder also will represent the office in contacts with the state and federal governments, foreign governments, agencies and educational foundations that sponsor international students, and the greater mid-Michigan community. She or he works actively with departments and units across the university, but especially with the Graduate School and the Office of Admissions on international enrollment management issues. The Director consults frequently with the Office of the Vice President for Government Affairs to provide timely information on pending legislation which could potentially impact the international mission of MSU.

The Director reports to the Dean of International Studies and Programs and is responsible for leading a staff of about 16 full time professionals and about six undergraduate and graduate interns. She or he must effectively interact with faculty members, department chairs/directors, university administrators, staff and students in addressing the needs of the international population at MSU and collaboratively setting the priorities and direction of OISS. The Director will oversee the management of several budgets (e.g., general funds, scholarships, external program funding and resources earmarked for sponsored students). Minimum qualifications: masters degree and five years experience in developing and managing university international student/scholar program. A Ph.D. is desired. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience; a comprehensive benefit package is also offered.
