The University of Connecticut, University Information Technology Services (UITS), is seeking a highly technical and self-motivated Director of Networking and Telecommunications. The Director of Networking and Telecommunications is a member of the senior leadership team for University Information Technology Services. This is an exempt, non-union position of the University and the appointee serves at the pleasure of the University President. The Director of Networking and Telecommunications is responsible for the design, deployment, operation and strategic evolution of university wide voice, video and data network infrastructure in support of the university mission of research, teaching, learning and outreach. The Network Engineering and Telecommunications Department provides, voice, video and data connections to all student rooms, common areas and administrative buildings. Responsibilities include the design, construction and maintenance of the infrastructure that provides all communication services within and between buildings. Network Engineering and Telecommunications is also responsible for the wireless connections deployed throughout the Storrs and Regional campuses.
The Director of Networking and Telecommunications is responsible for the management of the Networking and Telecommunications staff and infrastructure. These duties include overseeing the technical and operations staff in all aspects of voice, video and data infrastructure at the Storrs campus as well regional campuses including staffing, hiring, training, monitoring and evaluation of employees while serving as the departmental representative for all union-related issues. The Director develops and administers the annual budget, monitors revenue and expenditures and collaborates with the UITS Budget office on financial and budgetary issues. The Director develops and maintains a long-term strategy and assigns goals for each area to enhance and contribute to the inter-relationship of the department within the overall workings of the Division. The Director guides personnel within the Department in adapting to the changing cultural and operational environment of the Division and is an effective working partner with the other members of the UITS Senior Leadership Team.
The Director of Networking and Telecommunications ensures networking and telecommunications support for all business, educational and research objectives for the University as well as the control, reliability and performance of all networking and telecommunications systems. The Director researches, evaluates, and develops University policies and procedures for the implementation of technical and operational standards or requirements and manages networking and telecommunications operations to ensure successful integration, maximum efficiency and cost effect service delivery. The Director ensures superior customer service by establishing service level agreements and works with members of the University community to plan for future services and requirements. The Director also directs the acquisition, configuration and maintenance of all voice, video and data infrastructure.
The Director is responsible for staff and project management to include installation, repair, implementation and operational coordination of networking and telecommunications projects including the implementation of the Universitys Network Master Plan and ensures the development of the ongoing plans necessary to meet the Universitys continuing infrastructure and service requirements. The Director is responsible for departmental operations goals and objectives, including business models and short and long range plans. The Director of Networking and Telecommunications keeps abreast of all networking and telecommunications issues and trends within higher education and attends conferences, workshops and other training opportunities.
- Bachelors degree from an accredited institution.
- At least 10 years of progressively responsible experience in a technology related field.
- Strong awareness of current trends in networking and telecommunications within higher education.
- Excellent and demonstrated project management skills, from project initiation through completion, including budget and timeline expectations and responsibilities.
- Strong personnel supervision skills, including employee performance/evaluation, training and mentoring, communication and setting direction, and building effective work teams.
- Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated institutional leadership capability within a management team setting, providing group-based and multi-unit technology solutions.
- Demonstrated strategic thinker with the ability to develop long term plans and effectively execute them.
- Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Engineering or another related technical discipline.
- Five years experience in networking technology.
- Advanced degree in a related field.
- Relevant professional certifications.
- Experience with High Performance Computing.
- Experience with business continuity and disaster recovery planning.
- Professional full time work experience at a research university.
- Senior level experience at a comparable institution in terms of size, complexity or mission.
- Experience with large scale infrastructure.
This is a full-time, management-exempt position.
