Transfer Academic Advisor

UMass Amherst, the flagship campus of the University of Massachusetts system, is seeking an energetic professional to join its undergraduate admissions team. The University, which recruits prospective transfer students both nationally and internationally, receives approximately 5,000 applications for transfer admission each year. 

The assistant director of admissions is an integral member of the department’s professional staff, which is charged with recruiting, selecting, and yielding the undergraduate classes. The assistant director evaluates information presented by prospective transfer students in support of their applications for admission and determines suitability for acceptance. S/he also interviews and advises prospective students regarding admission criteria, determines the applicability of transfer coursework to the University’s General Education requirements, represents the University at community colleges, college fairs, panel presentations and related admission programs, works with academic departments to ensure appropriate coordination with admissions in on-campus programming, and develops an area of expertise within transfer admissions (e.g., the evaluation of international documents for transfer credit, working with departments on post-graduate second bachelor’s degree applicants, and/or support of transfer credit evaluation system course equivalencies).

Minimum Qualifications: Our ideal candidate will demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to the undergraduate experience at a major research university. A bachelor’s degree, ability to speak and write clearly and persuasively, sensitivity to multicultural and socioeconomic issues, and excellent organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills are required. Must be available and willing to work a varied schedule, including evening/weekend work and seasonal travel. Must have a valid driver’s license and proof of insurability. Working knowledge of Word and Excel is required. Preferred qualifications include prior experience as an admissions counselor / recruiter, knowledge of the transfer credit evaluation process, and experience with a student record database system. 

Hiring salary range:  $37,300 -$46,700                    

Normal starting salary range:  $37,300-$42,000
