Columbia Universitys Zuckerman Institute is seeking a Director of Financial Operations and Planning who will serve as the institutes Chief Financial Officer and lead all accounting and finance initiatives, and provide leadership in the implementation of all University-wide financial initiatives for the department. The Director will oversee all aspects of the departments accounting and finance activities, working to ensure accurate collection and dissemination of financial data, proper construction of financial models for business planning and new initiatives, and development and implementation of appropriate policies and procedures to create and maintain robust financial controls. The incumbent will ensure that all departmental accounting and finance policies are consistent with University policies and taxation requirements when applicable, and he/she will be responsible for the overall financial management and financial planning for the institute. The Director will help to develop the institutes first financial plan, providing for the occupancy and operation of a 450,000-SF state-of-the-art research facility that will be home to more than 800 scientists with related research expense, grant, and endowment income. The Director will also monitor the institutes endowment of more than $200 million. Other responsibilities as assigned.
Bachelors degree plus a minimum of 10 years of related experience required, preferably in higher education. A related graduate degree plus 10 years of finance experience with demonstrated leadership and management skills in a complex organization highly preferred. Budgeting as well as experience with grants management is also required. Outstanding financial analysis and modeling skills required, including variance analysis, financial statement analysis, and statistics. Demonstrated experience with enterprise financial systems required. Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including active listening skills, attention to detail, plus the ability to work closely and effectively with a diverse group of University administrators, is essential. The successful candidate must be a strategic thinker, with an open and collaborative style that encourages teamwork and cooperation. Must have a passion for excellent customer service and commitment to exceptional quality.
