The School of Medicine at Indiana University invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair, Department of Medicine. The Chair of the Department of Medicine will be expected to provide strategic leadership for all aspects of the Department, including but not limited to the implementation of a highly successful academic, clinical, and research enterprise.

He/she will be expected to be a dynamic leader who works collaboratively with the leadership of the School of Medicine, and the academic health center including IU Health, Eskenazi (previously Wishard Memorial) Health, and The Richard L. Roudebush Veterans Administration Medical Center. The Department Chair will be expected to build on the quality of the existing teaching, research, and clinical programs, and to increase dramatically the quality of patient care, operations, and service, as well as to promote growth in research activities, both within the department and in collaboration with other programs in the medical school. He/she will be expected to attract and retain high caliber and diverse faculty and trainees, sustain and enhance the innovative, nationally recognized residency training programs, and oversee the financial health of the department in general. He/she will be expected to enhance the departments success rate in NIH and other Federal funding, and to grow the portfolio of basic, translational and clinical research.

Interested candidates should have an M.D. or M.D./Ph.D., be board-certified in Internal Medicine, have academic credentials appropriate for appointment to the rank of full professor with tenure, and be eligible for licensure in Indiana.  

The Chair will report to the newly appointed Dean of the School of Medicine, Jay Hess, and will supervise the Schools largest department, with over 300 faculty across the following divisions: Cardiology, Clinical Pharmacology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, General Internal Medicine, Hematology/Oncology, Immunology, Infectious Disease, Nephrology, Pulmonary, and Rheumatology. Additionally, the Department of Medicine has strong, collaborative partnerships including the Center for Global Health and the Regenstrief Institute.
