The University of Chicago invites nominations and applications for the position of Assistant Vice President, Facilities Operations.

Reporting to the Senior Associate Vice President for Facilities & University Architect (the University's chief facilities officer), the AVP role establishes unified responsibility for the management of all operations, maintenance, trades, energy conservation and utilities management on campus, in off-campus non-dormitory residences, and off-site University operated research facilities.  AVP provides strategic leadership to a staff of 273 plus contract employees and is responsible for continually monitoring and reviewing operational and business practices to ensure their maximum value and cost-effectiveness, making recommendations and/or adjustments as needed.  The position also manages campus utilities, including utility and fuel purchasing.  The FY 2015 budget of Facilities Operations is $107 million in expenditures.

The AVP will foster a strong culture of customer service that encourages facilities staff to be more interactive and proactive; will play a key role in ongoing labor and management relations; will enhance the University's engineering and utilities program; will partner with other Facilities Services units to foster positive facilities renovations and construction transitions to ensure smooth, successful operations; will advance programs in sustainability including energy conservation and efficiency; and will play a major role in the University's facilities renewal effort. Ultimately, the AVP is responsible for developing and staffing an integrated, strategically-aligned organization that demonstrates a commitment to client service and provides maximum value to its clients.

The ideal candidate will have first-hand experience providing strategic direction, leadership and oversight for facilities management in a service-oriented organization in a large, complex and well-respected institution, or in a public or private-sector entity of comparable size and complexity.  Particular strength and depth of experience in building operations and successful management of housekeeping, general trades, utility operations, HVAC, space management, landscaping and grounds and engineering is required.  Requirements include a track record of supporting overall institutional strategy through excellent facilities operation service and delivery; an undergraduate degree in engineering or related field; and a minimum of 12 years of experience.  The successful candidate will demonstrate a collaborative leadership style, deep technical expertise and strong communication skills.
