The department of Biological Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University seeks a Special Faculty Lecturer in genetics and molecular biology starting Fall 2014. The principal teaching obligation will be on our campus in Qatar; however the candidate would be expected to spend up to one semester on our main campus in Pittsburgh. Our campus in Qatar is located in Education City, Doha, along with campuses from several other major US institutions.
The responsibilities include: 75% Teaching, 10% Curriculum development, 15% Conducting independent research.
The successful candidate will be expected to work independently as well as be a part of a new and vibrant teaching team in Doha. The position will involve: teaching basic and advanced genetics and molecular biology courses to undergraduate students with a strong emphasis on research and hypothesis driven learning; new curriculum development; teaching students to read, discuss, and critique primary literature; developing and grading exams and other assessment activities; and setting up projects where students perform hands-on research. Initial teaching responsibilities will include sophomore level genetics and junior/senior level molecular biology. Long-term teaching responsibilities would include introductory biology as well as an additional upper-level biology elective course related to the candidates area of expertise.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in a related biological discipline, with a strong background in genetics and molecular biology. The ideal candidate should have a good publication record, research experience in genetics and molecular biology, undergraduate teaching experience, experience in curriculum development and the implementation of effective teaching methodologies, and the ability to work as part of a team in a culturally diverse environment.
